PROTON77 Hi I have tried a commercially recorded dvd( Bird Migration) works fine. I have cleaned the laser with a cleaning disc. I have also put in a CD-R disk and the disk type is displayed & a request for which type of formating choice is displayed. I stopped there because I did not wish to format the disc if the recorder would not play it at a later replay. I then took a brand new dvd+rw out of the box & inserted it . The recorder responded & tried to format the disc but on completion it showed Fail but no error code. Help !

You will have to go inside and physically clean the laser eye! because the cleaning disk's do not get all the film off the laser's glass eye. you need to gently clean the crease on the glass
if that don't do it , it may be able to be adjusted but otherwise the laser will have to be replaced

Optical Drives that uses lasers such as DVD players and CD-ROM drives in computers at some point in time will fail to read discs. On normal operation like what you have been doing for the last 3 years can cause laser malfunction due to wear and tear.

Disc Cleaner and Repair is your option.

Most likely you need a dvd lens cleaner. The lenses can become dirty. It is about 10$ at any electronic outlet or wal-mart or any of the likes. You run that through the player and you can give that a shot. Though being that its 3 years old you may want to consider replacement as you can get a much better model for a very very reasonable price under 50$. If you still need any assistance let me know. Please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.
Thanks,
Lee

Hi,
There can be two points of failure, one the software that controls the DVD player working also called a firmware , second the DVD laser inside the unit.
If you could give us the error code that is displayed on the panel in front it would help.
Also have you tested normal audio cd or a VCD in the system rather than a DVD , if it plays the same.

Thanks
Proton

    Hi Dave,

Sorry of keeping you waiting for a solution, as the problem seems with only the burning of disks and formatting the new ones. Its the drive bay that gone. Probable cause of failure is the laser that burns disks, has reached it max life or faulty drive. I would suggest to take it in for repairs, as the problem can be resolved by replacig the same.

    Thanks

Does this player still recognize another disc that was not made from it ? of it doesn't recognize and disc at all? if that is teh case that this can be a problem with the lens of the player already you can try to run a DVD cleaner and hopefully that will fix the problem but if still not this may need a lens replacement already...

Samsung DVD-VR330 unit will not accept a brand new blank DVD-RW disc---machine says 'load' for 20 seconds, before saying 'open', which it does.

The DVD-RW will work at random, some brands will wok better than others. Memprex, Sony, Maxell are 3 I can use sometimes. Once the disk is accepted it must be formatted. Click that and if accepted, first do a record for say 2 minutes to see if ti works.

If it works don't take it out until you're ready to finalize it.
That's mostly so the disk will be readable in other players, should it not want to go back in, you probably lost the record.
Don't write on the back, use a card and keep it in the cover.

Sometimes I can use those disk's in PC for data.

DVD-RW discs are ideal for temporary video recording and data backup, but they are not recommended for successful finalising, as there is no guarantee that the disc will work in another device.

Have you tried using DVD-R discs? these CAN be recorded in video mode AND finalised for compatible playback in other players. I assume the DMR-ES30V is a DVD/VCR combo unit - if so, the DVD recorder will not recognise RW discs; only DVD-RAM and DVD-R.

DVD-R discs are recommended for video recording and finalising in this model. (later model Panasonic DVD recorders allow RW disc recording).

Did you say you used a DVD-RW disc to transfer a videotape onto? The reason your PC won't recognise that disc is because the data format on it is a different language to what PCs understand - plus an unfinalised DVD-RW won't play in other DVD players - it is usually an incompatible format.

(DVD+RW discs with titles/top menus created in video mode CAN be played on a PC DVD drive or a normal DVD player as can finalised DVD-R discs (DVD-R discs MUST be recorded and finalised in the same recorder for compatible playback). DVD-RW discs can only be viewed on the unit they were written/recorded on.

The other reason for the 'remaining space' on the disc you describe showing less than 120 minutes is due to a title recently being recorded or erased - unless you format it - the 120 minute / 4.7GB DVD-RW will not show full available space. Erasing titles on re-writable DVDs does not increase space. The same rule applies to unfinalised +R / -R discs (you cannot re-format these to get the space back once recorded - they are 'once only' writables)

I recommend you invest in some DVD-R discs and re-copy your VHS tape to that - then if you are satisfied with the result, title etc., finalise the DVD-R - it will play on any DVD player or PC with DVD support (or it should). These discs are relatively inexpensive to buy just about anywhere.

Final note: do NOT finalise the DVD-RW you recorded (I hope you haven't already done this) - simply format/erase it - re-use it for something else or keep it until you need it.

You can use any brand of DVD, just take note of the format before recording/playing.

jamesgranger - I think your DVD recorder is still having trouble reading the DVD+RW. It should not have a problem using a DVD+RW many times. Try taking the DVD+RW and put it in your computer. Find it in Explorer, right-click and choose "Erase". Then try to record to it using the DVD recorder again. If it works, you can use this to record, though it might be a pain.

The fact that your machine will record to the +R means that it works. Failing to work (record or erase) on the +RW means it's not reading it well. I would try running the lens cleaner again if it were mine. Also, I would make sure that the unit didn't have a lot of dust in it. If you can, power it off and use some spray-air to be sure there's no dust. You may have cleaned the lens, but if there's a lot of dust inside the unit, it will quickly find it's way back to the lens and you'll have the same problem. Michael
