wouldn't the oven not lite at all if the ignitor was bad?

  • tchace Oct 22, 2008

I just tried the oven twice and it took 1.5 min both time from the time i turn the knob till ignition.Does that sound about right?

  • tchace Oct 23, 2008

yes tried to make cookies the other day and it took twice as long as required so i stuck an oven thermometer in and watched what it did and it averaged around a hundred degrees low after the initial preheat.the preheat came up to the 325 degree set point but the reheat cycles didn't.

Sounds like a bad oven/bake ignitor. very common problem on all gas ranges.

how long does it take for the oven to actually ignite after turning on to bake??? a GOOD ignitor will light the gas within a min, a sign of a failing ignitor is taking 2-4 min before actually igniting gas, and then not being able to maintain set temp

yea thats not so terrible, how are you noticing the 100degree low temp??? is food taking too long to cook??? or didi you put a thermostat in the oven cavity to check?? if you fond your manual there will be a way to calibrate oven temp up/down about 35 degrees.

yea that def sounds liek a weake ignitor, not able to re-ignite after initial cycling prolonging cook times and inabiltiy to maintain temps, I would reccomend replacing the ignitor assy, its mounted to the bake burner under the oven floor, part retails for probably $75 , a servicer will get from 175-235 to doi it for you

How do I set the oven on100.

I'm guessing that you want your oven at 100 degrees for drying some food/herbs, or culturing homemade yoghurt. I do all of those, so know the temp range required; 95-110. Most ovens can't be set as low as 100, but the cool thing about a gas range is that the pilot light keeps the interior temperature close to that, and if you keep the oven interior light on, that helps. Get an oven thermometer, costs under $10, test oven temp. If your oven doesn't do it you can get a pizza stone or even a few bricks, preheat the oven to warm the stone/bricks on the bottom rack, turn oven off. Then put in your product of choice on top rack. Leave yoghurt in for 8 hours, leafy herbs (sage, thyme, oregano, etc) for 12 or more hours. If doing yoghurt, don't open door, consistent temp is important. If doing herbs, crack the oven door open slightly with a wooden spoon to allow moisture to escape, critical to drying. I hope this helps.

Oven sometimes doesn't heat up. Sometimes heats up to desired temp, then quits working. Sometimes doesn't even heat up at all. When preheated light comes on, thermometer in oven usually says about 100...

This sounds like a weak igniter, it would have to be a gas oven and the symtoms usually are: takes longer than normal to ignite the burner, may or may not smell gas in the oven, does not maintain set temperature, eventually won't heat at all. On gas ovens, a glo igniter is like a light bulb, the more you cook, the faster it wears out. Bottom line, needs to be replaced. Good luck.

5 yr old Jenn Air Electric oven won't maintain oven temperature

Technician just left our house with same issue. Jenn-Air had issued a technical bulletin as the temperature probe is mounted directly to the heating element, and measures the heat of the element, not the oven. Their fix is a revised temperature probe that goes at a 90 degree angle away from the heating element.

If your temperature is consistent, just off by a set amount of degrees, there is an adjustment you can make at the control panel.

Preheat takes forever

click the link  Oven temp sensors sense the temperature is the oven cavity and the temp sensor changes resistance, this change in ohm resistance tells the oven control what temperature the oven cavity at and tells the control to shut off the element or turn it back on. The most common temp sensors used today ( *not all ) are approx 1000-1100 ohm resistance at room temperature ( 70F )
Some ohm readings and there temperature:
Degrees F    -   Resistance
            100 - 1143 ohms
             200 - 1350 ohms
             300 - 1553 ohms
             350 - 1654 ohms
             400 - 1753 ohms
            500 - 1949 ohms

Whirlpool built-in single oven AKZ451/IX/01

If this is an older oven, check to see if it has a control knob or switch labeled "manual and "hold". Make sure it's set for manual. The hold setting maintains temp at about 140 degrees.
If not the case, is this gas or electric?
