FPD2185W Gateway Monitor

This monitor is over a year old. I have replaced the capacitors to fix that problem. Now I am suddenly getting gray ghosting to the right of all images and words. I subbed another monitor to prove it is a monitor problem. Since I know how to take it apart now, I would be willing to tackle the problem if I knew what it might be.

Mine sometimes had the ghosting problem. Turned out to be the cable connector. Taping the cable to the back of the monitor relieved strain on the connector and eliminated the problem. It also eliminated intermittent flickering.

My screen turns black upon startup. For awhile when my screen was on, it would flicker on and off but remain on. Now, the only time I can see the screen is when I unplug vga cable then plug back in but...

You mention a VGA cable so I assume its a stand alone monitor for a desktop PC.

It can be repaired, this fault is usually indicative of a capacitor, maybe two or three bursting in the

a) Power supply.
b) Back Lighter.
or
C) Inverter.

As its 6 years old, I would suggest replacing would be the most cost effective resolution.

Gateway FPD2185W Monnitor Goes to sleep and won't wake up.

Hello,

It sounds like you have a monitor with a common problem. After a few years some LCD monitors will blow a power supply. The problem is caused by parts called capacitors overheating in the confined space of the monitor. If you are good at electronics repair/soldering you can usually fix he problem. Check out a few pictures on my web site www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htm You can take the back cover off your monitor and look for the bad parts, replace any that look like the pictures and your monitor should work fine. The capacitors do need to be installed with the correct + and - connections, note the stripe on the old one and insert the new one the same way. If you don't want to try the repair yourself we offer a repair service for $35 plus shipping.

I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution.

Blinking monitor

Hello, It sounds like you have a capacitor problem. It was about two years ago that some bad capacitors from china was purchased by several of the big monitor manufactures. These capacitors almost like clockwork start swelling after the monitor is about a year to a year in half old. The biggest manufacturer that this happened to was Gateway and you can do a Google search on just about any (FPD2185W Gateway Capacitor Problem) and the internet is full of unhappy people. They were not the only ones that purchased these bad capacitors. There are alot of how to guides on replacing them yourself if you have a little mechanical knowledge and a soldering iron. You can also find several guys on e-bay selling the power inverters with new caps or offering to fix yours. Just go to e-bay and type in Power Inverter for monitors and you will see. If this is your problem the monitor will get worse. They start not powering up after you restart the computer. But the power button will still be lit up. Then after a while it will finnaly come on. I hope this info helps at least point you in the right direction for research.

Have a great weekend

The backlight or inverter is going out on your screen.
Eventually it will just stay dark. You will need to replace one of the two if plan on keeping monitor.

If you find this helpful please rate so.

Thanks

When you say that you replaced "all the capacitors" what are
you referring to? There are 8 identical capacitors in the corner
of the Power Supply/Inverter board that go bad, but there are
also 3 capacitors in the corner of the Main board nearest the
connector that goes to the power supply that can also go bad.
These are associated with the part "U15" nearby, which is the
3.3 Volt voltage regulator for the main board. If these caps go
bad, this regulator can fail to operate, and you will get no display.

Trying to fix lcd Gateway Monitor.

There's a couple capacitors you need to replace. On the video board, not the power supply board. There is (3) 470uf16v on the video board. They have to be the smaller ones, you can not use the larger ones (they will not sit flush onto the board) Any questions, e-mail me at Andrew@CreativeAudio.biz
