Sony Handycam DCR-TRV20 Mini DV Digital Camcorder
Problem for Sony Handycam DCR-TRV20 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Rewinding the tape stops after a few seconds and eject comes on. Also battery dies in 5 minutes.

1. When rewinding a tape, after about 30 seconds, it shows an eject icon and starts making a pinging sound. At that point, you have to take out the tape, put it back in again and then again rewind.

2. The battery despite being fully charged still dies in less than 5 to 10 minutes of recording. (This could be related to the above problem since this has never happened before.)

- I took the battery out and tried to rewind it and had the same problem. That (with your input) tells me that the belt/motors/stuff... need servicing/replacement.

Not sure if the battery dying in 5 minutes is related to the above problem or not.

What's a reasonable place to get this kind of work done in Dallas ? I called Wolf Camera and they charge 250$ to even take a look at it.

I had this exact same problem, I was stressed as i have sold the camera and was just testing to ensure it still worked. I took this advice and used the charger plugged in direct to AC (bypassed the battery) and the camera now works. I will try recharging and discharging the battery a few times slowly.
Thankyou so much for providing this advice.

It does sound as if your battery is giving up the ghost. How long have you had it? If it's an older type is it a NICAD. If it is perhaps it's built up a memory. Fully discharging and fully recharging 3 or 4 times can sometimes give it more life but if it's geting a bit old maybe a new one is in order.

Have you tried using the power supply and bypass the batteries altogether? See if the same fault occurs.

The halting rewind could be caused by a slipping clutch or slipping belt, Maybe it's time for a service. But tie the rewind problem to the battery going flat it sure sounds like a dying battery to me.

By the way, the charger light isn't saying the battery is good and fully charged, it's merely saying it can't charge the battery any more when the light changes color or goes out or whatever indicates a full charge.

I took it to Radio Shack (they charge a lot more reasonable amount to take a look at it).
Apparently some card needs replacement & it will cost me around 200 $ to fix it.
So I've mothballed it and bought another camera. :-(
