Most common cause is the failure, or wear of the rollers at the rear,
the drive belt places a lot of torque on the drum, and it has rollers to support this force, in addition to nylon guides as the front has

good roller

most dryers access from the front, the front panel and door come off,
here are generic removal instructions

with dryer unplugged examine lower front panel.
If there are two screws at lower corners

  • remove screws
  • swing front panel up from bottom
  • unhook top clips
  • undo door switch wires
  • set panel and door aside
If there are no screws
  • remove llint screeen from top
  • remove 2 screws from under lint screen
  • with putty knife or other blunt blade
push spring clips at front top corners
  • tilt top up
  • remove 1 screw each side 1/3 way from top of dryer
  • tilt front panel down
  • undoor door switch wires
  • set front panel aside
Common to both types
  • reach under drum to belt tensioner, pull tensioner to end of spring travel
  • unhook belt from motor and tensioner
  • withdraw drum forward
  • examine rollers felts nylon guides
replace rollers in pairs if worn
replace nylon glides if worn
replace felts if worn, the back one may wear before the front one,
if the dryer is the open drum type,

I have the same grinding noise when i first turn my dryer on.. i removed the belt to the drum and i still had the problem when i turned the dryer on, for a very short period of time, which points to the motor..

The noise developed again months later .. what i found out was the fan cage was cracked on the motor shaft, and moving iin a wobble or egg shape motion, hitting the edges of the fan enclosure. making a noise as it hit the edges ,, the sound also depended on rotation and if the dryer was just starting, as in cold, or it was greatly reduced after it was running with heat for awhile..the sound sounded like a tennis shoe was rotating in it when the dryer drum was empty and turned on to rotate.

There are various different appliance parts suppliers that you can find online to purchase a belt for your dryer. A couple of them are Sears parts direct, repairclinic.com. You could also check locally to see if you have a repair parts place in your town.

Maytag dryer (MDE4000AYW) making a sorta grinding noise when the start button is pressed then the drive motor starts up & the grinding stops. It sounds like a starter or transmission problem but I...

Many dryers use rollers or wheels to support the clothes drum. When these rollers are worn, they can be noisy. You should replace the whole set of rollers at the same time. Dryers have a tension or idler pulley that keeps tension on the main drive belt. When it's worn, it can be noisy. When that happens, don't lubricate it. Just replace it. Some dryers support the clothes drum in the rear with a center spindle instead of rollers. The spindle may be a ball-and-socket type support or a shaft through a sleeve. When the components are worn, they may squeak, squeal, or rub. You can't repair them. Just replace them when they're worn.

Maytag performa electric dyer makes dragging noise drum turns but acts like something catches and makes a dragging or scraping sound

assuming nothing is stuck around drum pull off the front and check the fan. If it is noisy for a few seconds after you stop the dryer then the fan may be stripped on motor shaft. while off you can check the front glides and the rear rollers

My Maytag dryer (model # MDE4806AYW) makes a grinding sound all of the sudden. Sounds like the cylinder drum is scraping on something. The dryer is only a couple of years old. What do you think needs to be...

Could be your front glides on your drum housing. They are just Teflon pads that the front of the drum rides on. If they wear down you will get a metal on metal rubbing. The part number is 40116501. The other possibility could be your rear rollers going bad but they usually will make almost a squeak usually. They are what support the rear end of the drum.
Hope this helps _MJ_

Maytag gas Dryer is Noisy

If the noise is like a shaking of rattling , like coins being shaked , then it is an object trapped inside the drum.

If instead the noise is a loud grinding , that may get louder on high speed, then it is usually a bad drum bearing.

If dryer is not cooling, check that the noise is not coming from the ventilation fan.

Rollers and belt tensioner can also make noise.
