but if not the only choices are to use a pirated one or go buy a legit copy

No, as far as I know, Microsoft does not allow download of Vista. There are two ways:

1) Legal way: Call Microsoft or Acer and ask for a replacement CD (You may have to pay)

2) Illegal way: Download Vista from Internet

Your product key should be on the COA sticker somewhere on your computer case. If it is a laptop, look on the bottom. COA stands for Certificate Of Authenticity. if you can't find it, you can use the key from another machine with the exact same version of Vista that you have, Each key is good for two machine and the assumption is that one will be a home computer and the other will be a laptop and they will not be used at the same time.
