How to rotate a video clip I took vertically??

By superchef on Jun 03, 2006

I took a video clip when the camera was held vertically, and when downloaded it to my pc, it was 90 degrees flipped.

How do I rotate the MVI file?

- Thanks for the detailed solution, but I faced couple of problems:

1. Movie maker do not have a "tools" menue (at least for me)

2. Quicktime did not have the "size" option as well.

Vista
Start - Programs - Windows Movie Maker
Click Import Media - select the video clip you want to rotate from your files and point and click on it to highlight it - then click the import button lower right corner of screen.
When the file name appears - drag the clip to the video line at the bottom of the screen - point at file name and hold down right mouse button while you move the mouse to point at the video timeline then let go of the right button to drop the video into the timeline.
Point and RIGHT click on the clip you just added to the timeline
Click Effects
Scroll down to Rotate 90 and click to highlight it (you could also flip the video with 180 or 270)
Click the ADD button
Then click OK
The video will rotate.
Be sure to publish and save the new video with a name you can find...
File - Publish Movie - to computer will save it as a file on your PC - to DVD will start another program to create a DVD...

Have Fun

Yes, Movie Maker will rotate the video. Unfortunately, it usually also screws with the aspect ratio. I'd suggest http://www.snapfiles.com/download/dlvideofliprotate.html

Microsoft's Movie Maker will rotate movie clips 90' but you must have XP installed. If you don't have it installed it's a free download or you should be able to add it from your XP Disk.

You can rotate video clips in Windows Movie Maker by doing the following:

1. Import the video clip into Movie Maker.

2. Drag the imported video clip and drop it onto the timeline.

3. On the Tools menu, click Video Effects.

4. To rotate the video clip to the right, drag the Rotate 90' video effect and drop it onto the movie on the timeline.

If that isn't the right direction:

To rotate the video clip to the left, drag the Rotate 270 video effect and drop it onto the movie on the timeline.

5. On the File menu, click Save Movie File and follow the instructions in the Save Movie Wizard.

For detailed instructions, see Windows Movie Maker Help.

Note that you may need to adjust the pixel aspect ratio of your rotated video so that it looks normal during playback.

I'd recommend a good read of Movie Maker's Help section.

Another way is by using QuickTime Player, choose Get Movie Properties from the Movie menu, choose Video Track from the left pop-up menu, and choose Size from the right pop-up menu.

Click the Adjust button. Drag the red marks in the corners to resize the movie, and drag the red marks on the sides to skew the movie. Drag the red circle in the middle to rotate the movie.

You can rotate and flip a movie using additional buttons in the Size window. To restore the original appearance, click Normal. To present multiple movies in the same frame, add multiple video tracks and resize or skew each to the position you want. To put one movie in front of another, adjust the layer setting for a video track in the movie Properties window. "

I hope you understood that :-)

I'm not 100% positive but I believe Vegas will do similar tricks.

Video clips are not meant to be taken in a vertical format. Other than rotating the clip, it would mean turning your monitor on its' side to view it correctly. More trouble than it's worth. Bottom line is, don't shoot video in the vertical format, unless you are very adept at video special effect use, and have the software to go through a complicated process.

I have foolishly done this a couple of times too.....
Tried the windows movie maker option...good but distorts the proportions. This can be altered in the viewer but if you save the altered file it does not save the proportions so if you burn to dvd it is not good.
I tried the virtual dub from snapfiles and it is brilliant.....saves correctly to view too.....and better still it is free!!!
try it....I was so thrilled.

Hi, I bought a Kodak digital C813 camera and took a video with the cameral sideways to get the tall view. After download, my video plays sideways. How can I rotate this 90 degrees? I have contacted Kodak help and they have no suggestions except "buy video editing software". The service person could not suggest a product or freeware.
