It is possible, although when my belt went out, it was a squealing sound. it is easy to access your belt. make sure power is off. most maytag dryers can be opened up from the front. first remove bottom panel, this will expose the screws needed to get to the front panel (the one that has the door in it). once this is off, you can inspect the belt with your hands and a flashlight. if you think it is bad, it is best to replace it, they are not that expensive when you but online. also, if you are replacing it, you should check all of the rollers that the drum rotates on. they should be able to spin very easily. if they do not, you might as well replace them also. i found that out the hard way. hope this helps!

My dryer (maytag atlantis) has started making a loud clunking noise with each revolution. its still drying fine but sounds terrible. any thoughts?

A loose belt will allow the drum to slip when clothes hit the paddles in the drum. It sometimes sounds like a pair of tennis shoes are in the dryer when it slips and is usually rythymic.

These machines also use drum rollers that can make a racket when they go bad.

Good luck.

Dryer has developed a noise (clunk) as it turns

the clunk is from a worn bearing on the belt tensioner that the drums belt goes through. If the bearing freezes up the rubber layered roller will get out of round and sound like a drummer beating on a drum

Clunking sound at startup and seems to hesitate

UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE STARTING ANY REPAIRS
Your problem sounds like drum rollers have flat spots on them or in need of lubrication.
If you have a front loading machine,
Remove the electrical console that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer. Be real careful not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch. Then remove the top of the dryer.
Remove the front of the dryer. This will expose the drum and belt, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers.
Check your rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them replace them.
If they don't then they probably only need lubrication. Lubricate the shaft of the rollers with a good grade of machine oil such as 3 in One oil. Reassemble the dryer, plug back in. This should solve your noise problem.
I will include these two websites for parts and further help:

Both also have chat assistance 24/7.
Good Luck,
I hope this helps

My Maytag dryer buzzes when I push the start button. If you hold it in, the dryer will start but makes a noise, almost like a bad belt. After a few minutes the dryer will shut itself off and will not...

Remove the belt from the motor and push 'start'. If the motor makes loud noises, squeals, or the shaft has side play in several directions, then it probably is the motor. Replace it. If the the motor runs quietly, then check the drum by hand to see if it is making excessive noise while turning. There should be a little resistance to turning, but not real difficulty. Hope this helps.

Clunking sound on dryer

Remove the front panel and check the blower wheel attached to the motor.
It may need replacing.
Possibly lint and debris blocking it.

Knocking sounds

Ususally knocking is a sign that the rubber belt which spins the dryer tub is old and has hardened. If the knocking sound gets quieter after you have run the dryer for 30 minutes or so, then the belt is the problem. As the dryer turns, it heats up the rubber belt and makes the belt more pliable. This quiets the knock. I have seen dryers work fine for years, knocking the whole time. Have the belt replaced if the sound bothers you.
