Re: updating Quickbooks on Vista OS
There are a couple of things going on here.
First, and most important, Qb 2005 was not designed to run on Vista. Vista was barley even in the planning stages when 2005 was programmed. Vista will probably run it, but in a compatability mode ( pretending to be an older version of Windows), but updating the program will be nightmarish at best because the updates are pointing to files that are either 1) no longer used by Windows or 2) the versions and functionality of the files has changed.
My best advice- restore the backup on an XP box, or get a later version of QuickBooks that will run on Vista.

Why is this happening
issue can occur as a result of uninstalling the Google Desktop installed by Quickbooks on a computer running Microsoft Windows Vista. Launching
QuickBooks after uninstalling Google will cause the error message.
This issue is also known to occur with computers that have been
upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista, where Google Desktop was
uninstalled under Windows XP. Both cases would yield the same error
message. How to fix the problem
This issue was resolved in the latest release for your version of QuickBooks.
Please update your program to the most current release.

I think Intuit draws the support line at 3 years Even though you have probably registered your product, if there is any trouble with it and the new computer, you will be on your own. I think you would be putting yourself in unnecessary jeopardy to upgrade as you describe at this time. (Your business depends on your computer and software, to operate) You must also be aware of Vista troubles.
If you are in the market for a new computer, you may opt for the new Windows 7 OS and possibly upgrade your Quickbooks at the same time for maximum benefit.
If you have the Vista computer - you already have the Quickbooks, it costs nothing to give it a try. Presumably, you have a XP computer with Quickbooks on it now ... If the Vista - Quickbooks combo doesn't work out you could upgrade the Vista to Windows 7 ... you have nothing to loose in this senerio.
I hope I have provided a little insight for you to consider.
Here is how to load and activate Quickbooks 2005 on Vista...
First of all, if you already have an activated copy of QuickBooks 2005 on another computer open it and go to "help" "my license information" and print this out so you have the details needed for activating your reinstalled copy (you don't need a fresh activation key and you may have trouble getting one as QuickBooks 2005 is no longer supported by Intuit).
On your new Vista computer, insert the QuickBooks CD but cancel any program install windows that pop up. Go to my computer and find setup.exe on the CD, right click and select the option to "run as administrator"
Once installed, navigate to the QuickBooks folder on your hard drive (typically C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks) right click on QB32.exe and on the compatibility tab select both Disable visual themes" and "run as adminstrator". Now open this file to run QuickBooks and select "file" "Update QuickBooks" to download and install all updates. QuickBooks will not work properly until you have downloaded the updates, closed and reopened the program.
I had problems with activation but I got around this by unplugging my network cable so that I had no internet connection. If you run QuickBooks without an internet connection, when the screen pops up asking you to "activate" click next and the screen to enter your license details will appear. enter your details (printed out from your previous installation) and you are done. You can restore the internet connection and use QuickBooks 2005 normally.
You probably opened an old file. You will need to find the current file that you were using. Use the search and search for all files ending in .QBW
Check the dates they were last used (you don't want the one with the most current date since that was the old file that was opened.)
You will need to say "yes". This will install all the data from your business computer so your laptop computer data matches your laptop. The only problem comes if you have made changes on your laptop that you didn't bring over to your business computer. If that is the case, those changes will be lost when you update.
If is any help - we have just had the same problem.......had version 5 (very old) of QB
changed computer to Vista and would not work so had to buy Pro 208 for Vista . We really had to get in touch with Quickbooks - they send you a free upgrade kit (disc which is Pro 2006 version (not a fuull version but enogh to get the data over) then you load that on your old machine transfer your data to that then copy that again - then load into Pro 2008 - worked fine for us - have come across a hiccup with VAT - but however I guess we are going to have to give in and phone them after the Bank holiday........apart from that everything was fine.
be brave and phone 'em - tech support was helpful.
