Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

1 Answer

DVD DL Doesn't Work

Acer 5100 with DVD RW DL.  XP Pro SP3.  It doesn't recognize DL discs with any app. It never did.  Acer Tech Support won't discuss it because it's XP, not Vista, but I did send a Nero utility report on the drive, and they responded to that with the comment that from the readout, it wasn't a DL drive.  It does not say DL on the drive, but it does on the box and all ads.  I've seen a few other comments on sites w/this same complaint & w/Vista.  Acer has no firmware for it & can't even tell me who the manufacturer is.  Apparently they buy in lots.  Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jon

SLIMTYPE DVD A DS8A1P.  No manufacturer listed.  "Device is working properly".  I installed CDBurnerXP (nice).  It read the DVD as DL and set the limits, etc... but when I hit burn, it said it couldn't use the media.  I tried 4 different discs (same brand) all with the same result.  I've only tried one other brand (before) and it gave the same error type w/Nero.  So the drive is reading it as a DL disc (so did Nero 6.6), but I don't know if that's possible w/o being a DL drive?
Any thoughts?  Maybe just sensitive to cheap brands?

Go in to the device manager and look at what is listed for your DVD burner. It should give you a make and model of the burner itself, or at least a model. Look this up on Google and see if the drive really is a dual burner or not.

The specs that I pulled for the Acer 5100 states 'dual-layer' as well, but who knows, it is possible someone didn't assemble the laptop properly. In that case, I would exchange it for a replacement if at all possible.

If you look up the make/model of the DVD burner and it is infact not dual layer, and you are unable to return/exchange the laptop, then you may have to invest in one yourself.

If the make/model does show it as dual-layer, then it may be a software issue. I don't know what version of Nero you are using, but you could test the DL capabilities with a free cd burning utility called CDBurnerXP.

To get to the control panel in Windows XP, click on "Start" right click on "My Computer", go to "Properties" then click the "Device Manager" tab then click the "Device Manager" button.

Hope this helps!

It's quite possible. I prefer Memorex myself. Otherwise please check the make/model information in the device manager to make sure your device IS dual-layer. Looking up the make and model of the DVD drive will yeild better results and is by far less expensive than trying different flavors of burnable DVDs.

Won't burn DVD data discs, error code 0x207

Have you looked at this from ACER: http://acer--uk.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3410/~/error-code-0x207-shows-during-recovery-dvd-creation I'm sure you already know it seems to be a common problem. Every post seems to point to Media type , can't use RW disk, +or-, seems kink of finicky which seems odd. Only use DVD+R or DVD-R.

L305D-S5930 dvd wont burn documents to a dvd disc

You need a program, like nero.
if that doesn't work then put a DVD in the drive & see if the computer picks it up in the my computer.
the first thing that goes in a CD/DVD-RW drive is the DVD heads, thats if your drive is a CD/DVD-RW.
Have a look on the front of the drive tray, if it say CD-RW DVD ROM then it doesn't burn DVD's it only plays them.

Taken from the acer support website.
" Optical media drive 8X DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive:
  • Read: 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-R, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD-ROM, 8X DVD-R, 8X DVD+R, 6X DVD-ROM DL (double-layer), 6X DVD-R DL (double-layer), 6X DVD+R DL (double-layer), 6X DVD-RW, 6X DVD+RW, 5X DVD-RAM
  • Write: 24X CD-R, 16X CD-RW, 8X DVD-R, 8X DVD+R, 4X DVD-R DL (double-layer), 4X DVD+R DL (double-layer), 6X DVD-RW, 8X DVD+RW, 5X DVD-RAM
"
This model of computer does not have a blu-ray drive unless you got a third party upgrade. In this case, you will need to track down special drivers, which can best be done by whomever sold you the drive.

I have acer aspire 4520.I have upgraded to windows xp sp2. The empowering technology does not work.It says " the specified file is not found".I cannot find the empowering technology software...

Acer Aspire 4520 Notebook Technical Specifications:

Operating System Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium Processor AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-57 (512KB L2 cache, 1.9GHz) Chipset NVIDIA nForce 610M Memory 1GB (1GB installed in one of two memory slots) DDR2 667 SDRAM User upgradeable up to 4GB (one 2GB memory card in each slot)* subject to availability of 2GB cards
*If upgrading after initial purchase, one or more of the memory cards provided with the system may have to be replaced with optional larger memory cards in order to achieve the maximum capacity.
Storage 120GB* hard disk drive Integrated variable-speed Super-Multi drive (DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RAM):
-Read - 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-R, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD-ROM, 8X DVD-R, 8X DVD+R, 6X DVD-ROM DL (double-layer), 6X DVD-R DL (double-layer), 6X DVD+R DL (double-layer), 6X DVD-RW, 6X DVD+RW, 5X DVD-RAM
-Write - 24X CD-R, 10X CD-RW, 8X DVD-R, 8X DVD+R, 4X DVD-R DL (double-layer), 4X DVD+R DL (double-layer), 6X DVD-RW, 8X DVD+RW, 5X DVD-RAM
5-in-1 card reader for optional MultiMediaCard™, Secure Digital card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO™ or xD-Picture Card™

Surely to load XP is a DownGrade. As this notebook is dual core, I would run Vista 64 or better still Windows 7 64.
If you wish to persist with an old system, you require SP3 for XP.That may be available from a software store but is no longer supported by Windows.
Try http://www.notebook-driver.com/laptops-information/acer-aspire-4520-notebook-technical-specifications/ for drivers that you will require to have support from Acer.

Hope that clarifies your situation.

I need to find out what type of disc to use with our dvd burner

The specification of the DVD drive for the Aspire 5930 is
  • Type DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM / HD DVD-ROM - Integrated
  • CD / DVD read speed 24x (CD) / 8x (DVD) / 1x (HD DVD)
  • CD / DVD write speed 16x (CD) / 4x (DVD±R) / 2x (DVD-R DL) / 2.4x (DVD+R DL)
  • CD / DVD rewrite speed 10x (CD) / 4x (DVD±RW) / 3x (DVD-RAM)
This means you can burn CDs -R and +R type disc (incl R/W)
Burn single layer and dual layer DVD -R and +R disc (incl R/W)

Instead of trying to remove the internal drive, which is still useful, do what I did and buy an external DVD drive, just plug it in with a USB cable...then you still have your internal for nornal stuff and you can move the external around anywhere to take care of the heavy duty stuff...good luck..pls rate this solution.

Acer Aspire 5100 no longer "sees" its cd/dvd drive- anywhere.

You can check the BIOS to see if the drive is recognized and even attempt to boot from the drive using a bootable CD to verify it is functional (if using the Windows disc - just verify it reads - DO NOT REINSTALL)

If the drive works use the following to get the drive back in Windows:

Always backup your registry before editing and use care to find exact key!
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.
