AVR 20 II intermittent loss of sound

My AVR 20 II receiver hav been with me for about 6 years now.
the problem is,the sound will loss (silent) intermittenly. It happen randomly.
its kinda like this normal-silent 2 sec-normal-silent 1 sec-normal again for long period then it happen again. It does not matter if the volume is high or low and happen on all surround option. The receiver display did nok flicker when it happen so its not power problem i guess.I have open the unit and there are no burnt or spoiled component.

Speaker used are Infinity SL50 front speaker,,JBL Flix2 center and surround speakers.

At first i tought it was caused by heat but putting two cooling fan doesnt seem to be helping.

SOURCE: Yamaha HTR-5990 Receiver

I JUST EXPERIENCED THE SAME SITUATION HERE IS THE SOULTION YAMAHA SENT ME TO RESET THE SYSTEM HTR-5990 YAMAHA HTR-5990 FACTORY PRESET PROCEDURES All models require the STANDBY/ON button to be turned OFF to start the reset process. NOTE: The remote control cannot be used during the reset procedure. All necessary buttons to complete the reset process are located on the front panel of the receiver. This procedure is not intended to correct intermittent shut-off symptoms or problems MODEL: HTR-5990 (U.S.A. model/s) (BEFORE YOU CONTINUE, PLEASE READ THE ABOVE NOTES!) 1. Before you start this procedure, locate the MASTER ON/OFF button and the STRAIGHT/EFFECT button on the Front Panel of the unit. 2. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR RECEIVER’S MASTER ON/OFF HAS BEEN TURNED OFF. 3. With the Right Hand, press and hold the STRAIGHT/EFFECT button. With the Left Hand, press the MASTER ON/OFF button and HOLD both buttons for no more than “3” SECONDS, AT THE SAME TIME. SP IMP. * 8 MIN. will appear on the display, which indicates you are in the Diagnostics Mode. 4. Rotate the PROGRAM KNOB to the right (ONCE) until the display reads PRESET *CANCEL. 5. Press the STRAIGHT/EFFECT button (ONCE) and the display will change to PRESET RESET. 6. Turn the unit off by pressing the MASTER ON/OFF button. 7. Wait 5 seconds, then turn the unit on by pressing the MASTER ON/OFF button. You have now reset your component to the factory settings. NOTE: Yamaha receivers don’t have to be reset during normal operation. It is not recommended that you reset the receiver unless a setting has been changed that you are not aware of, or the receiver is not operating properly. The reset procedure will clear an incorrect setting that might be causing abnormal operation. GOOD LUCK

SOURCE: DENON AVR 2802 (NO SOUND)

If "Digital" sign blink on front panel, it means DSP do no start properly. If DSP do not start, main UC mute audio. Change IC, AT49LV002-70TC (IC 817 ) at DSP board (Denon P/N: 262 3010 006).

SOURCE: center speaker no sound

had the same problem and SOLVED it.. the problem is caused by bad solderjoints on the pcb with the pre-out connectors on it. the solution is to take this pcb out and inspect it visually for signs of loose/oxidized solderpoints - indicated by a faint gray 'ring' near the soldered wire. just resolder and there you go! an amp as fresh as on its day of birth.. enjoy

SOURCE: Sony's STR-DE675 5.1 Channel Receiver - Speaker OFF problem

There's a button that turns the speakers OFF right above the headphone jack.

Get the manual: retrevo.com

Testimonial: "@dunnbiker Very true on assumptions! I've tried everything the manual suggests. Right now, nothing is connected to the unit, but upon power up, I get the SP:OFF display (which is not seen in the DEMO mode). I will try the headphone jiggling idea and see what happens."

Hi Steve

I have worked on these units in the past as a Harman Kardon service agent. They are decent units and well worth persevering with.

By the sound of your symptoms, the signal is not making it from the pre amp stages to the power amp stages. This can be caused by a few different things.

1. check that the tape monitor switches have not been engaged
2. check to see that the pre out main in connections on the rear of the unit have been jumpered. See page 12 of the user manual for info about this.

You can also download a user manual for the amp from Kardon-AVR-25-II-Receivers-manual/id/390bh145/t/2/">here to assist you with working things out. I suspect that the jumpers are missing at this stage

I suspect that the jumpers on the rear are missing at this stage. Check for that and get back to me.

Finally the problem was with the HDMI cable. When I pushed it in on the TV set the problem disappeared. It seems the connections must be quite firm on the HDMI cables otherwise anything may interfere to the sound.

Denon AVR-1803 shuts down

I am a Tech in Michigan and have worked on lots and Lots of Denon AV Receivers. These units have Protection circuits for Overcurrent, Dc Protect, 15v Regulator inbalance, Rail Voltage Inbalance, Low Ac Voltage, Low Standby Voltage and Thermal Protection just to name the ones I remember. My guess is you Probably have either Poor Intermittent solder connections or Amp is not Ventillating Properly. Make sure you leave room above Receiver to Vent and You are using no Less then 6 ohm speaker Impedance per ch. Refer to Speaker Impedance chart on back panel . kstahl65@att.net
