E1 is an open thermistor. The thermistor lives on top of the blower housing. Get to it by removing the bottom quarter panel.Does the E1 error represent failure of the thermistor,
The quarter panel is right there in front, down at the bottom, below the door. Look closely and you'll see two screws. Remove them and the panel comes right off. Some pics at this link:

I have error codes E1 and F9 on my whirlpool duet washer

Duet washers use F/XX codes. I couldn't find E1 but the F/09 code is set by an overflow. To eliminate the code:
- Check for clogged/kinked drain hose
- Check wire harness connectors for pump, pressure switch, and CCU
- Check/clean pump filter
- Check inlet valve for complete shut off
- Check for pump failure
- Check pressure switch operation

Whirlpool Duet and Kenmore Elite Electric Dryers Not Starting

Measure the resistance of the thermistor and refer the table below. Normal thermistor resistance is around 10000 ohms (10K) at room temperature.

Replace the thermistor if the resistance is significantly higher (or lower) than what it is supposed to be based on the resistance table above. Check the wire harness connecting it to the control board, if the resistance turns out good, and make sure the connectors are good and the wires are intact. Replace the wire harness if necessary. Consider replacing the control board if both the thermistor and the wire harness turn out good. The link below might enlighten you further on the troubleshooting of the thermistor.

I get an E1 code on a whirlpool duet dryer. What could the problem be.

The problem is the control thermistor being detected open by the electronic control. It's either the wire harness connecting the thermistor and electronic control is broken or the connection is loose or the thermistor is indeed open. Measure the resistance of the thermistor then refer to the temperature and resistance table for the normal thermistor resistance values. Click on the link below for the detailed troubleshooting procedure.

Code E1

E1 or E2 Thermistor Failure

The dryer will not operate if the exhaust temperature drops below 18 degrees F. or exceeds 250 degrees F.

When the thermistor circuit is open (>50K ohms), the error code E1 flashes in the display.

When the thermistor circuit is shorted (<500 ohms), the error code E2 flashes in the display.

Normal thermistor resistance values:
60 degrees F. - 15.3K ohms.
70 degrees F. - 11.9K ohms.
80 degrees F. - 9.2K ohms.

Take the top off the dryer and inside you'll find the "tech sheet." It has instructions for removing the front panel and locating the thermistor.
