I have a brand new le creuset whistling kettle. First few times it was used without a problem. Now every time I use it the water has an antiseptic / medicine smell and the tea / coffe has a strange taste. Boiled the kettle again today and also put on a pan of water. Again it was just the water in the kettle that smelled. Should I have done anything with the kettle prior to use ?
    Any advice much appreciated.

Brand new Kenwood 'Turin' kettle. Boiled water has slight antiseptic/tcp taste. Just returned brand new Morphy Richards kettle as this had an even worse, undrinkable version of the problem. Kenwood kettle is better but still not perfect. Is this a 'new kettle thing'??? (Both kettes were boiled at least a dozen times to exclude manufacturing residue.)

Had some small plumbing issues recently involving non-return valves and mixer system so can't rule out their involvement. Google search suggests water companies certainly are blaming appliance & plumbing issues. Also, just had notice from local water company (SWW) that they're planning a week's maintenance in the area. Now have too many variables to pin down problem & STILL no decent cuppa in over a week! :(

It must be the kettle causing the problem from what you say. If th e kettle is new the problem should reduce with use but if it is old it will get worse (possibbly due to rubber washers/seals perishing)

Why does the water taste funny after two . Months use

Usually taste change is created by a build-up of something inside the kettle or pot. Try the Baking Soda cleaning method:

  • Pour one cup of baking soda into the kettle.
  • Add water to fill
  • Heat the water and baking soda to boiling
  • Unplug the kettle and allow it to set for at least 10 minutes.
  • With a scrub brush or other scrubber, gently scrub the inside of the kettlepot. Be careful not to burn yourself.
  • Once it's all clean, wash with soap and water normally and rinse really well
That will usually get out any old residue that's affecting the taste

Russell hobbs kettle

You will need to first shock that kettle first bold hot water then remove it and replace with very cold or ice water. The smell like plastic is brought by the Plastic which over heats and somehow weakens to a point of melting thus releasing a smell into your water, Shocking the kettle would help if not then you will need to buy another kettle as that one might not be original or just wasn't tested for regularities and standards.

Why does the water boiled in this kettle smell and taste chemically? Any boiled in a plastic kettle in my home is fine.

hello,

the chemical taste of smell from your kettle means that the element in the kettle which provide heat to boiled the water has gone bad due to over heating

this occur when there is shortage of water level in the kettle when the power supply is on

to fix up this problem of smell and chemical taste in your boiled water you will have to make a change of the element (heater)because it has gone bad you can get a replacement of it in the store .

thank you and thanks for using fixya.

Awful smell and taste to water boiled in a stainless steel kettl

I have the same problem. Noticed it was in two different pots. The comment number one must be correct because I only use VERY high alkaline water to boil my foods. I had a feeling it was my water. So interesting! I will clean it w white vinegar and see if the smell goes away. SAME weird chemical smell- turns your stomach.

New kettle leaves a metalic tast to water after boiling.

Try different water. If you use tap water normally, buy a jug of water at the store. The pH may be wrong (particularly if it is too low) and leeching metal from the kettle. Good luck.

Strong metal taste, how do I get rid of it. Coffee tastes terrible with very strong metal taste. I have boiled kettle about 8 times, but am unable to get rid of bad taste.

Professional chefs face this problem many times over with their stainless steel wares. Fill the coffee pot with water. Add a tbs of bleach. Let set for 2 hours. See if that helps. If it doesn't, please let me know.

How to descale Philips HD 4651/C Electric Water Kettle

Not having received any solution message from FIXYA contributors, I consulted with a family member
and also my long held Time-Life Books, Fix It Yourself Library, Volume: Cleaning & Stain Removal,
ISBN: 0-8094-7400-X, Copyright 1990. My issue was resolved by using white vinegar and soaking the internal problem area for 30 minutes. The appliance has cleaned up like new and works fantastic. I apologize for bothering you.
