Your P4VM800 won't detect a SATA II (3 GB/s) drive, only a SATA I (1.5 GB/s). You basically have 2 options:
1. if you have a friend or colleague with a machine that supports SATA II, install the disk in that machine and us the manufacturer's utility to set the SATA to 1.5 GB/s (Seagate/Maxtor disks, but only these do have a jumper to do the job but SATA is in other respects jumperless). Then you can reinstall the disk in your machine.

2. Buy a host adapter card for SATA II and install it in a free slot in your machine - but may be better to put the money towards a new motherboard.

Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your "((MOTHERBOARD TO THE HARD DRIVE))" make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error hope this helps

I want to upgrade my cpu for this mother board from 1.8 ghz to 2.8 ghz. What cpu should I go with. Am I going to run into problems with the bios or anything else. Also need to know if I can upgrade...

Here is a link for your mobo

http://www.asrock.com/MB/overview.asp?Model=P4VM800

looks like you can use any intel processor as long as its a socket478 by intel

Check out nvidia agp cards at www.nvidia.com You can get a 512mb card agp.

The bios is plug and play which should not be a problem.

You may need to upgrade the memory also.

I had connected a sata 1 tb , to my genx P4vm800-m and the motherboard is not detecting it .what to do?

first make sure the power supply to the hard disk is given properly. Then see whether the SATA cable is connected propely. If both are connected properly there should be some hard disk activity. When you touch the hard disk you can sense it. If there is no activity try connecting it to your friends system still if there is no activity in your hard disk. It might be dead because of static shock.

If it is not dead you can get it resolved by connecting all the cables properly.

Check your user documentation for the hard drive to see if it has a user-accessible jumper that will switch it to 1.5Gb mode. I know that Seagate/Maxtor drives have a jumper they refer to as Force 150 and Western Digital calls their jumper OPT1 Enabled. If this option exists with this hard disk, it should solve your problem.

Motherboard sata driver p4vm800

Hi ben,
you can download that driver by clicking on this link:
http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.asp?Model=P4VM800&s=478

You make a floppy disk with this driver & during windows install you watch the bottom of the screen & press F6. Windows will ask you to insert the floppy disk. (Do not forget to remove the floppy disk).

Good luck Ben!
