Which base are you referring to? The removal black base yes, you need to add water according to what you are cooking for example a stew, a chicken, beans etc., The cooking element, which is the base after you remove the black base in which the glass cover fits over you do not need to add water.

I believe you need to scroll down to filters in one of the setup modes. You should find black and white there.

put the black pin of ur headphone in mic jack of laptop(mostly red color) and green pin of ur headphone in output audio (mostly green).
