When booting up, the monitor status splash shows up. Then it goes into a black screen with some small white boxes in upper left-hand corner. It takes forever to display the log-in screen, probably more...

Switch ON the PC, boot the PC in 'Safe Mode' by continuously tapping F8 button after you switch On.

Let windows boot in Safe Mode and log in to windows.

Go to 'Start'--->Programs--->Accessories--->System Tools--->System Restore

Here you will have to check "Restore computer to an earlier time' and click Next
Now you will find one Month Calendar window with Dates below, go to the previous month by clicking the '<' sign in the upper left hand corner of the Month Calendar and select any date that you see in Bold.

The detail of that particular date should show "System Checkpoint" and time on the right hand side box. Select that date.

Now, Click on Next and System Restore will start and windows will take a reboot.

After reboot your problem should be resolved.

I've had my sony vaio laptop for around 3-4 years. Today, i was browsing the internet when a tab opened saying that i had a virus that needed scanning. This initially tipped me off that something had...

Possibly you have a corrupted install of windows. Maybe because of that incident in browsing of your.
I suggest installing windows again, but this will erase all your files on the laptop, so I Suggest backup of the files, for example removing the HDD from the Vaio and installing it to another PC.
You can start the recovery process(where the Vaio will be returned to its original factory state) by pressing F10 or ALT+f10 or SHIFT+F10 depending on your Vaio model, after the splash screen "VAIO" after you have powered on your laptop.
to be sure it would work, power off the laptop and then power on, and just as you see the VAIO splash screen keep hitting any of the combination button above, keep trying until you induce recovery. After you have successfully started the recovery feature, just follow the prompt and you will be running again in no time.
Again, THIS PROCEDURE WILL COMPLETELY RESTORE THE VAIO TO ITS ORIGINAL STATE,erasing all data you have stored on it.

I want to wipe my computer and take everything back to factory settings with only the programs that wcomes with windows. My computer is a little older but I have a dell and it has windows xp profesional on...

1 Turn on the computer.
During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.
2 Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>.
If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish starting, and then restart the
computer again.
NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.
3 On the next screen that appears, click Restore.
4 On the next screen, click Confirm.
The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.
5 When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.
NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.
6 When prompted, click Yes.
The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that
appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the
computer was turned on.
7 Click Next.
The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.
8 After the computer restarts, click OK.

Screen went black...rebooted, computer seems to

Remove the battery and disconnect the power adapter for about a minute.

connect only the AC then boot it back up. If you can see the Compaq splash screen and still unable to load Windows, re install OS.

If you could not see the splash screen, too bad it could be a motherboard issue,

Hope this helps.

White screen after turning on laptop, have to reboot

It's sounds like the lcd is going out.

But it could also be GPU related.

Try updating the motherboard firrmware / bios

Updating the Video Drivers. If that produces the same results then more than likely the lcd will have to be replaced.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

How do I restore my dell inspiron 2650 to factory defaults?

If your system is PC Restore Equipped, it will show show a black page with a blue bar across the top after the Dell Splash Screen. the bar will have www.dell.com in White letters. If you see this page for about a second during the boot process, the system is PC Restore Equipped. At the page with the blue bar, press CTRL+F11 and that will initiate the restore process. Providing the image is not damaged, then restore process takes about 20 to 30 minutes and will return the system to out of box configuration. If there are any errors or if the PC Restore page is not available, then you'll have to do a clean install of Windows using the Dell Windows XP CD that came with the system, then load drivers and applications.

Screen black on reboot

start the computer and when the computers splash screen shows (dell) etc. tap the F8 key repeatedly until you see the multiple startup choices. Scroll to "safe Mode with Networking" and select it, you will see the operating system listed as the target operating system, click that (hit enter) start in safe mode. When it boots do you see the screen with no problem? if so then the resolution may be wrong on the normal start up. On the dektop in a clear area free of icons, right click and scroll down to properties, click on settings, then move the resolution slider to either 800 X600 or 1028 X 768. click on yes to change the settings, restart the computer by hitting start > Turn off computer > restart. Reboot it normal mode (just let it boot as you would normally) If you can see the screen, you are all set, if not there is another issue to deal with.
