Can't access Hard Drive

I recently recieved a Western Digital Hard Drive from a family member. Their computer had crashed and they wanted to get the pictures off the drive. However when I plugged in the Hard Drive as a slave so that I could access it and remove their pictures. However when I plugged the drive in it showed up on my menu as 2 drives instead of one. My relative told me the the pictures were on the 2nd half of the drive but when I try and access it a window pops up saying that the drive isn't fomated and askes if I would like to format it. I know formating a drive will erase everything on it. However I can access the first half of the drive, but the pictures are on the second have which needs to be formated. Is there anything I could do to retrive them?

I actually have complete access to the first partition, it was just my relatives computer that crashed. However I still can't access the second drive. I'm maybe give the software a shot, I'll have to find a sight that I trust not to put viruses or malware on my pc. Any other ideas now that you know I can access the first partition?

1. Do NOT click "yes" to format the hard drive in case that the formatting process makes things worse.
2. Do NOT attempt to write anything new on this hard drive in case of any data loss.
3. Download an unformatted hard drive data recovery freeware to your computer and try to retrieve all your wanted pictures back before the formatting process:

4. Save and back up all your restored data on a different hard drive in case of data recovery failure.
5. After the data recovery process, simply format this drive to see whether it can work functionally as before.
In the future, you should learn a lesson to be more careful about your data and always back it up well.

What you family member did was create a partition for their harddrive and installed windows into the first half (thats why you can access it) the second half is locked by the administration right on the windows installed into the first portion. what you have to do is get partition recovery software available on the net and at software dealerships. that is the only way since you said that the first part on the partition had crashed. You might also try to repair the operating system in the first partition, that could give you access into the second partition

Hardware damage - yes , most likely all the data is lost.
You might have a slim chance of recovering something if you take the actual hard disk out of the WD casing and you connect it directly inside a desktop, if it's still working at a basic level it should appear in My Computer.

Hi!
What do you mean by wrong AC plug?
Did it get an electric shock by any chance? Any smoke or funny burning smell coming from the inside? Is it covered by dust?

I was copying something from my External Drive to my computer hard drive. the copy froze and my computer froze i had to restart and ever since I can't get my External Drive to connect to my computer.

you need to scan your external hard drive for bad sectors problems, you can use winpe mini cd, its a live cd that have hirens boot disk inside it as well as a preinstalled windows eviorment that will give you access to many tools and softwares...download it , burn it to disk and boot it.....

the idea is when you was copying files, some read errors occured that crashed the system, and whene the system crashed, bad sectors/clusters appears, and they need to be scaned and fixed.

External hard drive not recognized

You need to first narrow down the problem to either your PC or the external hard drive. Do you have access to any other PCs you could try connecting your hard drive to? (think friends, family, public PCs, etc)

If the hard drive works on other PCs, we know it isn't a problem with the hard drive.

If it turns out that the hard drive is fine and the PC is the problem, I would suggest going in to Device Manager and uninstalling everything USB related. Once you have done this, either reboot your PC or right-click inside device manager and "scan for new hardware". All of your USB related devices should reload their drivers automatically. You may want to try this both with and without the usb drive connected.

Another tip would be to try various USB ports.

Take it our of the external encasing and plug it in directly to your motherboard. This has worked for me in the past. I just had my second wd external harddrive crash so now I will do the same process all over again.
