Magnetrons cannot be 'repaired,' only replaced. While the cost of them has decreased by about 75% over the last couple of decades, the parts you receive are often inferior to the original and will show this only after installed and operating and then the time required for different tasks may be much longer.  Unless there is something unique about the unit, I advise replacing it.

Micowave blows the fuse when turned on

The transformer that makes hi voltage for the Magnetron tube is causing the fuse to blow. This may be a bad Magnetron tube or a shorted winding in the transformer. Price for the repair may be too close to the price for a new oven, so check with a repair center before deciding to replace it.

My GE model JVM1631WB002 is giving off a burning smell. What can I do?

A burning smell is usually a sign of a bad magnetron tube, the microwave source. As they age they take more power, and this causes excess heating that can cause the smell. Eventually the tube burns out and you get no heating. If you've been noticing longer than normal cooking times, it's due to the weak tube.

You can replace a magnetron, but it's a costly part (around $100-$125) and the repair should be done by a professional because of safety concerns. (Several websites describe how to replace a magnetron if you'd like to try it yourself, but you need to be very careful. MICROWAVES USE HAZARDOUS VOLTAGES WHICH CAN KILL YOU.) Between the part and labor costs, when the magnetron goes bad it's often more economical to spend a little more and replace the oven.

There are some other parts that can get hot and sometimes smell, but the magnetron is most common. If you want to keep the oven, I'd suggest letting a professional check it over and give you an estimated for the repair. Then you can decide what you want to do.

Everything works on the microwave accept when you attempt to cook - it does not heat. It makes a straining sound like it wants to kick on, but does not kick on?

The oven has either a shorted HV diode or magnetron tube. The tube generates the microwave energy and the diode is part of its power circuit. The bad parts could be replaced, but it's usually not economical to repair a microwave oven unless it's a very high-end model or a custom built-in unit. Between the cost of parts and labor, you might find the repair cost getting near replacement cost.

If you really want to keep this oven, take it to a service shop for an estimate. Microwave service should be left to professionals. There are potentially deadly voltages present, and a chance of microwave leakage if repairs aren't done properly.

My GE Spacemaker 1800 microwave looks and sounds as if it's heating, but no heat is generated when turned on. Is it repairable, and if so, how?

HI. in most cases, this will lead to a failed Heating device(magnetron tube). It would be wise to check the Magnetron cutoff fuse to be sure of its integrity. if the fuse is blown, simply replace it. if the fuse continues to show continuity, replace the magnetron.

(((The fuse is located inside the unit along side the magnetron)))

I ran the microwave with nothing in the oven (obviously by mistake). Now it won't heat the food. Timer, clock, etc works. Is there a simple part that I can replace to solve this problem or have I killed...

You can replace the magnetron tube and , the heating will be restored. this is repairable.

Most magnetron tubes will run in the 120 to 140 dollar range.

Maytag MMV4205BAS OTR microwave does not vent internal steam and the microwave shuts off. It takes about 15 minutes to reset and power back up. What part is bad?

I have this same microwave, and I'm having trouble with it shutting off. It use to go back on, but now it doesn't work at all. I tried replacing the two fuses under the panel, but that wasn't the problem.

After some research and calling vendors, I believe the issue is most likely due to a failure of the magnetron tube which supplies the microwaves. Take it to a repair professional to get a cost estimate on fixing.

This model of Maytag seems to have BIG problems! It's either the tube is out, the turner doesn't work, or it just goes dead. Usually it's after 2-4 years of service. Poor quality... Maytag lost a lot of clients with this product!

Typically, no heating of food, indicates a bad Magnetron (tube) or associated components. The oven can be repaired. Magnetrons are not hard to replace and can be ordered online through MCM electronics www.mcmelectronics .

However, due to the dangers of high-voltage within the unit, I would recommend taking the unit to a repair center.

Look in the manual to see what the warranty says. See if there is any information regarding the magnetron or parts. You may be able to get it repaired for free parts, less labor.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

Good Luck,

- Jim

Not the magnetron if intermittent. Probably a bad smartboard. Easy to replace if you know the basic precautions to take.
