Question about PC Desktops

Gateway GM5420 Picture sometimes.

Hello. I noticed that you have some PC experience. IO was wondering if you could help me out. I got this PC for really cheap but I'm stumped when trying to fix it.
When I power it up it shows the MS ball the goes to user log in. Once you click on a user icon then the screen goes blank and there is nothing. (Same results in safe mode) BUT, when you hold the power button to shut it down, then you see the Vista shut down screen. What could be causing this? I have tried it on a brand new LCD monitor and an older CRT but same results. Please let me know what you think,. Thanks!!

    Hello. I was thinking why not do a System Recovery. My HP says to push F11 during boot for a system recovery. Do you know how to do this for a Gateway? If I can't do that then how do I do a clean install? I do not have a disk with Vista Home Premium, but I have a license key. Thanks!!

Hi old friend,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

Offhand, it could be the video card or its driver(s). I doubt if it is any settings/configurations such as screen resolution or refresh rate, more I am tempted to think that the video is muting. If it is an add-on card, perhaps it may require cleaning of the pins/edge of the card. Alternately, if the PC has likewise an onboard/built-in, you may want to try that instead.

Alternately, why not just do a clean/fresh install?

Cheers.

    Sorry not that sure with a Gateway. Alternately, you can "borrow" any Windows Vista Home Premium installer CD and when prompted for the CD Key to use the one that you have.

    Hi again,

    Two possibilities:

    • video card problem - either drivers or hardware. If it is an add-on, temporarily replace, if it is built-in use an add-on card;

    • virus - remove the hard drive, use a SATA/IDE to USB adapter, connect to a 2nd PC, do a virus scan/clean.
    Other ideas you may want to consider/try:

    • clean/fresh install - delete all partitions, a virus may be in any or all partitions;

    • boot from the CD - in the CMOS/BIOS settings/configurations (F2?), change boot order, CD/DVD first, pop in the Windows installer, reboot;

    • instead of Cancel, why not allow it to connect to the Internet. It may be a Windows Validation check, or even if it were a virus, allow it to do its thing. At least it would likely allow you to view the normal desktop and you can always format and re-install Windows.
    Appreciate getting back with updates.

Why does my GM5420 Tower appear to start up normally, but it doesn't register my screen?

The motherboard or the video card might be defective. Check on that side. If you have an installed video card, try replacing it.

Why does my GM5420 Tower start up, but doesn't Read/Register screen?

I am not familiar with Gateway machines but this should work for most computers. You will have do some reading up. Yes it's probably a VGA (15 pin D-sub) the connector is often blue but can be any colour)

If your mouse/k-b etc are wireless they may need fresh batteries.

It may be the graphics facilities on your computer are u/s. It's quite awkward to solve this problem because you can't see what you are doing. You might try drivers for the monitor you are using (do not pay for these and be careful to void websites which are sources of adware or other malware) though this is unlikely as basic graphics are supplied in the BIOS

Try "gateway" support, or the "gateway" or other computer forums.

Read this http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?70528-Upgrading-Video-Card-on-Gateway-GM5420

If there is a peripheral graphics card and your machine has on board graphics / video enter the BIOS (read up) and choose on - board video.

Try a graphics card (or on-board, or a different one known to work - see one of the many articles on how to set up a graphics card) Borrow one.

Essentially my course of action is try an alternative graphics facility to the one you have at the time of your post.

(Ihave just looked at the specification for this model at http://www.cnet.com/products/gateway-gm5420-core-2-duo-e6300-1-86-ghz-2-gb-320-gb/specs/
and it has on board Intel graphics default. Assuming the hasn't been an graphics 'upgrade' on your PC

Why doesn't my gateway pc computer start?

Computer does not boot up The problem maybe the RAM, it is faulty or just needs reseating to make proper electrical contact.
Reseat the RAM and then boot up your laptop. If it still does not boot up then remove the RAM module/s and take them to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM for you. Just like you sometimes need a mechanic to repair your car, sometimes you do need a technician to diagnose and identify the fault or faults on your computer. Not only does a good service technican have the experience to deal with this type of problem, they also have the equipment that allows them to look at things the average computer user can't see, and he has a collection of replacement parts that can be used to quickly test individual components on your computer.

Need A processor fan motor for mo. gm5420

Hi ome, I looked up some specs and found a pdf file that has photos of the cpu fan. It looks to be a standard fan that you should be able to buy at Radio Shack. Remove the fan and take it with you to Radio Shack and they will be able to match it up. Here is the link to the pdf file on your GM5420: Alternatively if you want on buy one on line, the Core2 Duo has a LGA 775 socket type and you can find fans at the link below: Hope this helps

Check on the motherboard make and model number.
Type this information into Google and then go to motherboard site, and they should have updates and a manual, which will have all the required information, hopefully.

Hello,

Did you notice cd utilities enclosed in your gateway desktop? If yes then you should insert that in the cd rom and then install all the drivers needed from the chipset, VGA, audio and other drivers.

If you have no utilities then you have to download it from the gateway website. or here:
