Hello,

Check what is happening when you press flash focus?It completes 1 full cycle or not?
If not complete 1 full cycle check small value resistors on convergence board.All RK series resisitors..

Hello!you mean: colors out of convergence? nothing you can do about that, unless you replace 2 convergence amplifiers I.C. chips, plus all those burned 1 watt low ohms resistors with exact values, which only could be obtained via service manual or schematics. After resistor is burned, there is no way to read color code properly, due to partial evaporation of pigments. this is a "pro" job. If you try or tried, already to converge those "stubborn" crosses, there is more to do, even after you removed and replaced two 20 pin I.C. chips, soldered dead into sweep module, plus located and replaced resistors with precise values, you need to get your settings back to normal, by going into "factory service mode' or, at least into "convergence alignment" menu and fight with those crosses!Don't forget the white "****"! Otherwise, you will be re-servicing your set all over after 30 days of usage.good luck,Alex.

I have a hitachi 43FDX15B RPTV It appears to have a convergence problem, I've read about replacing the stk IC's but which resistors need to be replaced and what are the values on the DP15k/08 Board?


This model uses two of the STK-392-120 CHIPS and here are most of the usual resistors to suspect or check:

Hitachi AT03411S RK43 RESISTOR Hitachi AT03608S RP22 RESISTOR Hitachi AT03195S RK46,RK54, RK62 RESISTOR, 1.8OHM 1W Hitachi AT03857M R815,R865 RESISTOR, 1/2W 100 OHM Hitachi AT03191S RK50 RESISTOR, 1W 1.2 OHM Hitachi AT03197S RK50 RESISTOR, 1W 2.2 OHM Hitachi AT03199S RK41 RESISTOR, 2.7 OHM 1W Hitachi AT03202S RK42 RESISTOR, 3.3OHM 1W Hitachi AT03204S RK58 RESISTOR, 3.9 OHM 1 WATTThe RK ones are all marked on top and bottom of circuit board---usually if one is bad you will be able to see it is discolored---all are very low value and should read open or good only.

This is a fairly easy set to do this on---the whole convergence board (right side from the back view) is held in with 3 screws and an assortment of plugs--3 plugs are identical (convergence yokes and you need to mark so you get each back in same place)

A row of black snap plugs on the left side and with the screws and other plugs removed the board will lift up and out of the set.

DON'T waste your money on one of the "kits" being sold on the net---you can buy a pair of the chips for about 12 dollars on Ebay and usually only one (if any) of the resistors will be bad---those kits sound like a good idea but at 50-80 you are buying things you will not likely need to repair the set.

Looks like I have extra blue and yellow lines abow the image on my Hitachi 61SWX12B 61 in , just started today ?


If you go into the customer menu and select convergence and red or blue are skewed and will not adjust---you have a convergence circuit problem.

61SWX12B uses two of the STK-392-110 convergence IC chips. Both chips and any bad protect resistors around them need to be replaced and the set adjusted with the Hitachi remote.

Most of the time just both chips need to be replaced and the set adjusted.

Considering you can buy all the parts needed for under 30 dollars on Ebay if you or someone you know can do this repair you can save a lot of money--most shops are going to get 300 or more. I can give you general instructions and tell you the best seller to get the chips from on Ebay---I buy the ones I use there.

All of the resistors that fail are very low reading ones---like RK54(1.5 OHM-1 WATT) RK50(2.2 OHM 1 WATT) AND RK58(2.7 OHM 1 WATT)

These are not large resistors--all have location numbers on top of the board under them---most of the protection ones will begin with RK----check them like a fuse--they rarely go off value and if no reading across them they are bad---

There will be some higher value resistors like 150 or 220 ohm----never seen one of those bad.

Sometimes you just have to check them all and if they are good replace the chips and see what you have.

Do not forget to apply heat sink compound to the new chips before you install them(remove any old grease first from the heat sink.)

Good soldering is important here.

Color convergence problem


Follow the traces on the PC board from the ICs and you should find either pico fuses marked as Fxxx on the board or low valued resistors that may appear to be a bit burned. Some of those parts may be defective. These are the "feed" resistors or fuses for the power to the ICs. The low valued resistors are current limiting resistors that act like fuses. If any of those are open, the convergence ICs won't function properly.

Yes you can use them but read this first:

I could not have said it better myself, I keep this around for times like this.
The various IC's have different specs, one important one is the quiescent current. The higher number STKs have a higher quiescent current (+10%) If you replace a STK 392-110 with an STK 392-150 the small value resistors will "smoke" in many cases and have to be changed with different values. The different TV Help blogs are full of people that have put in the "new and improved" ICs then asked what to do now, all the resistors have smoked or the unit will not start. Hitachi has considerable information on the use of these ICs. In all cases they tell you to change the resistors for different values, to allow for the higher idle current. They also include information regarding alignment for minimum idle current in the circuit. This relates to height, width and hor/vert centre.
The design of the TVs is ok, the IC's fail from AC power bumps or lightning (accumulated damage to junctions over time). Semiconductors will run forever if they have a smooth DC power source, are ventilated to operate within temperature specs, and not overdriven. This was demonstrated when com satelites were first used. They had estimated electronic failure in 4 to 6 years and many last 20+ years. They are replaced when they run out of manouvering fuel or get an induced power surge from the sun. When the IC's run too "hot". there is usually a low ohm resistor that has increased in value and causes higher current output from the chip through the feedback in the circuit design. The resistor(s) may have changed from 1.8 ohms to 2.5 ohms, the TV will still run, but the IC will fail prematurely.
STK 392-110 will work fine if all the small value resistors are ok and the TV is not subjected to a hotter environment than normal or power line related troubles. Many RPTVs are mounted in enclosed areas with no air circulations or in direct sunlight. These situations will cause the unit to operate at raised air temperature around the IC's resulting in more failures. Some people have "hotter" houses than others, their convergence IC's will fail sooner.
If you can redesign the convergence circuits and waste your time replacing all the low ohms resistors, go for it. Otherwise use the STK 392-110, or whatever the manufacturer had in the unit. I know from experience. When Hitachi came out with "new and improved" replacement ICs we installed many STK 392-120 for STK392-110 in Hitachi and other makes. The result was many burnt resistors, many call backs and big expense. The same applies to the Samsung STK392-010 or STK392-040. Use the original IC.

Only use the same part number when replacing convergence amps, or you will need to replace all of the power resistors with recommended values for the convergence amps subsituted.

Colors all messed up


The fact that you used the term "magic focus" tells me you have a Hitachi projection set. When the colors no longer line up on a Hitachi projection TV, it means that most likely one of the convergence output IC's has shorted out. Sometimes a shorted convergence output IC will burn up a low value resistor too. I have also seen a convergence IC crack loose from the board and burn up 3 low-value resistors. If your set is using the STK392-110 IC's, it is probably a good idea to go ahead and replace both IC's with the newer upgraded STK392-150 IC's. The output IC's should be resoldered / replaced and the circuits checked and realigned by a qualified tech familiar with Hitachi projection sets.

Convergence problems?


While the OP may no longer have this issue, I'll comment on anyone else that may come across this.
In addition to the suggestion of replacing the ICs above by Leadtech, the resistors also should be changed at the same time.  Quite often, even if a single IC or both are replaced and the resistors are not, the issue will re-appear.  There are a few locations selling a kit in the $50 range, so the difference for the additional resistors is minimal.
As for the sound issues, several owners of this and other Hitachi RPTVs in this line have had issues with their sound boards, which seem to be largely a defective product.  Even replacement of these have resulted in the problem re-occurring at a later time.  I would suggest using an external receiver and speakers as it may not be worth the time and money to repair this problem.  -TD
