I disassembled the gears , cleaned and regreased, reassembled and it worked fine. I then removed the brushes top check them for excessive wear. Upon re assembly the unit does not work. I don't know how i could possibly harm the unit by checking the brushes, but here I am with my wife giving me the stink eye... Any suggestions?

Thank you Doug. The brushes can only fit one way and they are re installed the way they came out.

    Hi Mike,
If you have a torch, check nothing has managed to obstruct the path to the armature for each brush. We have come across cases where the cable from the field assembly has worked loose and only the brush is held away by the brush. As soon as the brush is removed, the cable obstructs the hole.

    Rgds,

Regreased kitchenaide mixer now won't turn on

Did you remove the carbon brushes. If so they go back in any of four ways. But only one way works correctly. If you did not remove the brushes then you need to set the speed timing on the speed control switch at the rear of the machine and you can find a YouTube video on this exact exercise on YouTube of course. You may have also reattached the wires to the speed control switch to the wrong connectors hence no work.

How to repair a KitchenAid mixer.

If your KichenAid mixer doesn't seem to have the power it once had try the following repair procedure.

More than likely the armature needs to be cleaned if you have made sure that the brushes are OK. The brushes are acceptable if they have 1/4 inch of carbon left. Disassembly of the unit is not that difficult.

First remove the screws holding in the brushes and remove the brushes. Make a note of which direction the 45 degree off set faces or you will have to dissable the entire unit to get the brushes in properly. Remove two screws from the rear of the unit holding the cover between the two halves of the unit (top and bottom). You will need to remove all the screws on the underside of the unit. Approximately 6.

The shaft located vertically has a pin in it which needs to be driven out with a punch/hammer. Then a "C" clip must be removed form the shaft to remove it. If you do not have a "C" clip pliers you can get them at most automotive parts distributors.

Next pry the bezel off around the exterior of the shaft which will expose about 6 screws which need to be taken out. Now you can remove the head assembly as well as the top of the unit exposing the motor armature. When reassembling this drive unit use some Loctite on the threads of the screws to prevent them backing out. This is a common problem with these units.

At this point you should be able to see how burnt the armature is. Using crocus cloth (very fine emery cloth) available at any home improvement store such as Lowes or Home Depot, clean the armature until it shines.

Clean the armature with a solvent to get rid of any filings or debris that was left from the cleaning process and wipe the entire unit clean.

Reassemble the unit and it should be as good as new. Remember to insert the brushes the proper way or the unit will not work. They are keyed.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Hobart A200 1st and 2nd gear have same speed after lever was removed and reinstalled.

I took mine apart completely and reassembled everything and greased everything and mine is doing the same thing. I'm thinking, also, that it is the tightening of the top lock nut.

Do the brushes need to be flat

Hi GWILSON622, from the symptoms you describe I suspect that one or both of the brushes is (are) not seated properly. Did you remove the brushes to replace them or were you just inspecting them? The brushes need to be installed so that they both seat correctly on the armature's commutator. See the illustration below:
0c6a56f.jpg
I'd suggest removing them again and making sure the concave contact face rests completely on the armature's commutator. If you've turned it 90 degrees too much, it wont' seat properly.
It would also be helpful to have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case, KSM90P, and select the file, KSM90PSWH0.pdf (354.08 KB) listed under Parts List (16) (check to see it this matches your mixer model).
Turn to pages 6 & 7, titled “Motor And Control Parts”, which provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer’s electrical components, along with all the parts. Locate Illus No 32, Brush holder that includes #18, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 31 which is the brush holder and brush & Spring assembly respectively. This illustration along with my initial reply regarding the orientation of the brushes should allow you to reinstall your replacements with confidence.
While your mixer is apart it would be ideal to check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc. It can be messy but quite gratifying to diagnose and repair your mixer yourself.
Here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able to completely disassemble and reassemble your mixer. Good luck! I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

I have a old model K4-B. It runs well but makes a

Hi SCS7896, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! Yes, the ‘large black screw looking things’ on the sides of your mixer head are the Brush Holder Caps, and they provide access to the electric motor’s carbon brushes, but they are not for adjusting. If you (or your husband) are DITY type person, and feel adventurous, and your mixer is not under warranty you can troubleshoot it yourself.
Since your mixer is a vintage KA mixer manufactured by Hobart, I doubt you will have your original Parts Manual on hand, but you might want to download the model K45SSW Parts List manual. The two mixers should be similar. You can download it from the KA website http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in this case use K45SSW, select the file K45SSWH0.pdf (341.41 KB) listed under Parts List (1) and then check to see how closely this matches your K4-B model.
Turn to pages 6 & 7, titled “Motor And Control Parts” for the disassembly and reassembly of the electrical components of your mixer, along with all the parts. Locate Illus. No. 32, Bush Holder Assembly, which includes Illus. Nos. 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, & 31.
Your husband would need to remove Illus. No. 23, Brush Holder Cap, in order to remove the brushes for inspection and/or replacement. If the brushes are chipped or excessively worn down they should be replaced. (NB: When replacing brushes make sure the new brushes are correctly oriented to contact the armature. The concave contact face should rest completely on the armature’s commutators. If you've turned a brush 90 degrees too much, it wont' seat properly and you'll get no 'juice' to the electric motor, so it won't start.)
I am more concerned that the growling sound you’re hearing is not a brush issue but it is more indicative of a transmission gear issue. You don’t say how old your mixer is or how hard it’s been used or if any preventive maintenance has ever been done on it? It may be time for some TLC maintenance, to include checking the quality of the gear grease inside the mixer head and inspecting the gears, particularly Illus No. 38, Worm Gear Bracket and Gear.
Turn to pages 4 & 5, titled “Case, Gearing And Planetary Unit” for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts. For starters, you should consider reordering the gasket (Illus. No 19) and O-ring (Illus. No 34). Once apart you can check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc.
If you really feel the need to re-grease your transmission, you should use a food-grade grease that you can order online (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used too – your call).
If you need to re-grease your transmission, you should use a food-grade grease that you can order online (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used too – your call).
Here are five potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com. You should be search for ‘food grade grease’. Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
Finally, here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able to completely disassemble and reassemble your mixer, should you decide to go that route.
If you feel troubleshooting and repairing is beyond your capability, then I would seek out a local small appliance repair shop in your area. KA Customer Care can give you names of local KA authorized repair shops in your area, but you can also do an online search to supplement what KA may provide you. Call to explain your circumstances and find out their hourly rate and get an estimate of what they think it would cost to repair your mixer. Also, always obtain three or more estimates – do some comparison shopping.
Good luck and have fun. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

Just replaced the worm gear and cleaned out old grease adding clean new grease. Plugged the machine in and it will not run at all. The machine had been working but not well since I had stripped the worm...

Hi PEGNGEORGE. I can understand your frustration after getting all that work done for the gear and grease replacement just to find that it won’t run. Makes you want to scream. But before screaming, let's see what might be causing problems.
If your machine is not getting power to the motor, and you’re confident that the motor was not damaged by the stripped worm gear, which necessitated the replacement in the first place, then there are a few things that we can look at.
The easiest to check are the motor’s brushes. During your disassembly, did you remove either or both of the motor’s brushes (from the side of the mixer’s head)? If yes, then you need to check their alignment on the armatures’ commutator. The concave contact face should be resting completely on the comutator. If you've turned it 90 degrees too much, it wont' seat properly and you'll get no 'juice' to the electric motor so it won't start.
If the answer is no, and you said the mixer worked, but not well after the worm gear stripped, that would lead me to suspect the problem most likely will be with your speed control assembly.
Since you’ve already replaced the stripped worm gear, I imagine you have your mixer’s Parts List manual on hand, but if you don’t, you can download a PDF version from the KA website: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use K45SSW, and select the file listed under Parts List (1), K45SSWH0.pdf (341.41 KB). Check to ensure it matches your mixer model.
Turn to pages 6 & 7, titled: Motor And Control Parts, which provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer’s electrical components, along with all the parts. You’ll want to focus on Illus. No. 25, Control Plate Assembly.
First inspect around the control plate assembly to ensure all the wire connections are OK. It's possible a connection has come loose. Unfortunately the whole controller assembly is fabricated on a little PC board which was not meant to be 'home fixed', and my 'expertise' ends there. A local small appliance repair shop should be able to determine if the controller assembly is functioning properly or not, or you can just order replacement parts without the testing.
As far as parts go, here are four potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com. Prices for the same part can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
You may already know about the website links below when you replaced your worm gear, but it’s always good to keep these sites in your ‘toolbox’. Here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able to completely disassemble and reassemble your mixer.

How does the replacement brushes go back in? Do they need to go in a certain way?

I am unable to remove housing cover of Kitchenaid Mixer #K45SSWH

Hi. Goto www.kitchenaid.com and do a search for your model#. Look for the manuals tab, locate and download the parts list for your mixer. These drawings will assist you with disassembly and reassembly. Remove the Planetary assembly by driving out the single pin that holds it to the mainshaft. Clean and regrease it too.

Over time the grease in your mixer will begin to separate into oil and harder grease base. It's time to remove as much of the oil and grease as possible, and then regrease.

To extend the life of your grease, run your mixer for a few minutes every week to keep the oil suspended in the grease. If not used for a long time, the oil will seprate.

I recommend using Chevron FM ALC EP-2 food grade grease, and after 5 years or so when it begins to drip, if you get a few drops in your bowl it won't matter much, in comparison with a petroleum grease that you shouldn't eat at any time.

Goto www.mendingshed.com and find their free Kitchenaid Service Manual and download it. This manual covers your mixer.

Regreasing your mixer isn't difficult, it is however, very messy to clean and regrease, so keep plenty of paper towels, rags, etc. handy. Latex or rubber gloves will help.

Mixer does not function at "stir" and lower speeds Does OK at mid and high speeds

Remove the brushes. Two black screws, one on each side. Pay close attention to orientation. MUST INSERT THE SAME EXACT WAY! Use electrical contact cleaner. I said electrical contact cleaner, put the WD40 back in the drawer!!! Using electrical contact cleaner, clean the contacts. Now clean them again, now repeat two or three more times. Spray SOME, meaning a little, into each hole. Reassemble and try it out. If this does not fix the problem refer to the section on removing the cover to access the motor and gears. disassemble clean the motor's brush surface and the contacts. if you don't know what I'm talking about then stop and call a pro.
This is a very common reaccuring problem with these things. Especially when meat grinding or cookie doughing with it. If you move to replace, get a stronger model, like the 500 or the 600. No, I do not sit around repairing mixers all day. I just happen to know a lot about the ones my wife has destroyed. Some two or even three times. after a while it pays to go get the right equipement.

Kitchen Aid Mixer has a sound but it doesn't have power to mix

Hi. Goto www.mendingshed.com and download the free Kitchenaid Service Manual.

You may have overloaded the mixer with bread or cookie dough, causing internal damage to the gears.

If you plan to do the repair yourself, you might also consider removing the old grease and oil. Remove, clean and regrease the planetary gear assembly as well. This will add years of life to your mixer.

Regrease with Chevron FM ALC EP-2 product.
