Question about Coleman Powermate Premium Plus 6250W Portable Generator

Coleman6250 Generator PM0545007

Motor will not start. Taken to repair shop twice - new spark plug, cleaned the switch. Motor started once each time after that. Tried later in the day, won't start. Apparent intermittent electric failure. Cannot find Briggs and Stratton serial number to try for shop manual. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem. It turns out the on off switch for the engine was bad. To check if this is what is wrong with yours simply disconnect all of the wires at the on/off switch. If the engine starts and runs, then the switch was bad.

EU3000is inverter generator. Why won't it start?


Check the switch on /off is not faulty try taking the wire off the switch that goes to the motor mine had that problem (lot of dodgy switches fitted to them ,make sure the choke is closing on fully.check spark plug not fouled up with carbon.

Your symptoms are from running lean. Foam air filters put debris in carb jets. Check all the carb passageways and jets. Always start with a new plug.

there should not be pinched wires...

if you mean "how do I bypass the low oil SENSOR" then the answer is to just disconnect it and tape up the end or snip it off in a location where it won't ground out...the way these engines kill the spark is by grounding the cdi coil wire...so fix that pinched wire and youre probably good to go...dont disconnect the low oil sensor unless its causing trouble....having low oil protection is good and might save you from blowing an engine

fuel, fire, mechanical. Miss one and she won;t run. Are you sure the gas was good? Not some old can laying around that may have turned or become water contaminated? If it was fresh gas, then take off the air cleaner and spray a little wd-40, or ether, or brake cleaner whatever is flammable into the carb throat. Just a 1 second shot is all it should need. Try and start with that. If it starts and then dies quickly, still a fuel problem. maybe a gasket is damaged, or the jet is clogged. When you said you checked for fire, you acutally took the plug out and had it grounded while spinning the motor and saw spark? If you saw a hot spark then you have eliminated fire. Mechanical not likely if it was running well a short time before. If a valve was damaged, it would still run but not too well. My gut feeling is it is related to fuel.

Fresh Fuel
Clean carburetor if stored with fuel in the tank and wasn't shut off
Clean fuel filter
Clean air filter
Proper oil level
Clean spark plug (just replace it, it is easier and faster)

As for checking for a spark, remove the plug from the engine, plug in to lead, then rest it somewhere convenient, with the threaded end to ground. (ie touching the chassis or frame)
The low oil indicator may be on the side of the engine, but I'm not certain.
If you discover that the spark is good, it could be a timing problem.
If there is no spark, it's probably the magneto.

Most gasoline engines need three basic things to run: proper air/fuel mixture, sufficient compression, and a properly timed spark. Check the easiest, cheapest things first, then check the "Gee, I forgot to turn on the gas" kind of things next, then work your way onwards from there.

Compression can be guesstimated with the proverbial thumb-over-the-empty-spark-plug-hole routine as you turn it over casually to check compression. If it doesn't blow your thumb out of position, you could have a hole in the piston (overheating response) or a stuck or damaged intake or exhaust valve.

Check for fuel flow by carefully disconnecting the fuel line to the carburetor and letting some run into a tin can (no styrofoam coffee cups, please). It should dribble freely. If not, you have to back-track the line and find out where the blockage is.

Spark is one that sounds like you've already tested (spark plug out of the cylinder head, hooked up and laying on the metal engine as you turn it over?) so check timing. You will probably need a manual for this test, although a good estimate is that the plug should fire just a wee bit before Top Dead Center position of the piston. Like I said, a manual comes in handy here.

From what you've mentioned, though, I'd start trouble-shooting at the fuel flow part first.

Just won't start


check the spark plug after a failed attempt to start. If dry, then no fuel is entering engine.
Did you leave old fuel in carb? if so, your carb probably is dirty: old gasoline deposits varnish, gum, and you will need to dissassemble carb and clean it.
