Front usb port of xbox looks broken, unit does nothing now

With the x box standing up and facing you, the usb port on the right hand side looks broken. The black piece of plastic that is inside the usb port came out and it looks like the contacts inside the port are squished. Would this cause the unit to "short"? It almost looks like someone didn't have the connector lined up properly when they tried to insert ito the usb port and "jammed" it in there

I have the same problem but the xbox plays and with several wireless controllers and the usb hub from Rock Band will allow us to bypass this until I can figure out how to fix it.

    The exact same problem

  • chad109 Dec 26, 2008

Both Ports on the front on my Xbox have lost the plastic guide and the pins are smashed. The 3rd port in the back works but how do I get at least two additional ports I can used WIRED controllers on?

  • Anonymous Jan 01, 2009

Same problem happened last night to me. Realized I had one of the black pieces outside of the 360. Only happened to one of the USB ports, but neither one works now. We've plugged the USB hub into the rear port to continue using it with RB instruments for now.

I have the same problem but my xbox does not turn on at all

  • FollowLukeSR Jan 11, 2009

i have the same thing, i was not aware that my friend had broken the little black piece of plastic that holds up all the gold things and then I tried to jam it back in there and screwed up all the little gold things inside. now the console wont start, and there is no way i could fix it without further ruining it.

  • tjack2009 Jan 16, 2009

The plastic insert in the right hand USB port stuck in the charger cable for the wireless controller (first use!) and came out/remains in the cable.

I just had a very frustrating call with "Vis" at MS Customer Support. MS policy seems to be that it must be my negligence that caused the problem.

"Vis" would not connect me with his supervisor and claimed never to have heard of such a problem. He ultimately agreed I could send the console in under warranty but warned me that MS might decide not to repair it.

Maybe Circuit City will exchange it.

YUP MUY SON BROKE THE USB PORTS THE GOLD METAL SPIKES WERE HITTING I SEPARATED THEM AND NOW IT TURNS ON ,,,

  • bpic May 08, 2009

I have the same problem. The first one broke when our kids accidentally put the controller in wrong, but the second one just fell out on it's own month's later when we (the adults) were setting it up for them.

This is the biggest piece of **** ever. I'm in IT and I work with PC's all day long. I've never seen USB ports fall apart like this. I wish there was a way
    to bet my money back.....

Simple. Just solved it with advice from this site. If you see any of the gold prongs touching the side (or possibly each other) then find a thing tool and try to hook the gold prongs so they point direct upwards. how bad they get bent doesnt matter, just get them all standing up and not touching the sides. you probably cant use the port again but atleast it turns on.

Some time if the contacts have not been damaged you can
carefully straighten them out and plug your usb device back in
but you will have to secure the connection with a little duck tape.

In some case where there is to much damage to the connector
you will need to have the plug assembly replace , they cost 10.00
and have to be soldered in , this does require a hot 40+ watt soldering iron and some skills at removing component's on a plate-threw P.C. board , Repair cost range 60.00 -80.00 for
a usb module replacement.

If you need more info , ask

Ok guys, here's what you do to fix that. First off, your going to need to buy a stand alone motherboard off of eBay that has the USB ports your want to replace on it. FYI, a mother board only costs approx $6.99 with shipping. Unsolder and remove the USB ports from the mother board you just bought, ( you can easily tell which solder points underneath the mother board correspond to the USB port your trying to replace ). Then unsolder and remove your XBox's brokenb USB ports and put the working one on and solder all of its connection points back on being careful not to damage the mother board or have any of your solder points touching eachother once your are finished.
Hope you can get your working!

My xbox 360 had the same problem black piece came out and would not turn on. but i put a jumpdrive in the broken usb port and without jamming it in there or messing up the gold prongs inside i carefully and constantly kept puting it in there upright and upsidedown and it eventually came on and my xbox 360 has kept turning off about every three weeks but i use the same process and it works every time! AWESOME TRY IT!

I can't believe how easy it is to ruin these USB ports. Thanks to all here for the suggestions. We got ours up and running, and put electrical tape over it so no one uses it again. FYI: I am switching to all wireless controllers now because it is not worth the massive heart attack I almost had when the darn thing wouldn't turn on.

It's fixed now!! Yes!! Thanks to all of you helpers.

No power on xbox 360

This is quite a common problem, the good news is that it is probably something really simple.

Have a look at the two USB ports on the front of your Xbox, you will probably find that on one of them the black insert has come out (probably with whatever was plugged into it last) you need to push the now unprotected pins away from the side of the port. You should now be able to turn you Xbox on. Don't try to use this port again, personally I would put tape over it just to make sure.

My xbox 360 power supply is in standby mode and wont turn on. meaning the yellow light is on the power cord. my game wont turn on why??

Make sure it's connected properly also do you jaw a broken USB port making a bad connection? If not you have bad MOSFET chips on the motherboard. There's around 5 of them the ones that usually go out are right in front of the CPU radiator.

The xbox its self just stopped working it wont receive any of the ;power from the pac which has a yellow light on it i tried with aother power pack so its definatly notthat i dont understand one minute it...

Check all power cables once more and if connected to an extension cable check that too and if all cables are connected try turning on console by pressing the eject button if this doesn't work and if another power supply doesn't work then you will need to get your xbox fixed.

My 360 won't power up. Orange light on power supply. No extention cord, changed wall plug, bought new power supply, removed face plate and nothing changed.

Have a look into the usb ports on the front right of the console, look for any damage or bent pins, if any pins are touching this will cause a short, so the console will not turn on.
Or it could be an internal resistor problem, which would be best looked at by a pro repair center.

Xbox wont turn on and all of the cords are in

1st check light on power brick, red means it has overheated, let it cool and give it more ventilation.
2nd are you using a play and charge kit, if so remove the cable, this happens with mine sometimes.
3rd look into the usb ports on the right hand side under the big flap (this is easier if you remove the faceplate) look for damage or bent pins this will short the unit so it won't turn on, just bund any pins back.
4th it may be a resister fault, you would be best to book a repair with a professional repair centre.
Remember thumbs up if this helps.

My Xbox wont turn on

You may have a damaged usb port, these are the two ports under the big flap on the right hand side of your console, look inside and see if there is damage or any pins touching each other, this is easily done, just bend any pins back.

My power supply has a yellow light and my xbox will not start up.

The power brick is ok, I find that this is usually a fault with a usb port, remove your faceplate, and look into the 2 usb ports on the front of the console, you are looking for any pins that are touching each other, or damage to the black locater bar, if there is damage this will short out your box thats why it won't switch on.
The best thing to do is to separate any pins that are touching or remove the broken locater bar, then put some tape over the port so you don't use it by mistake.
Vote if ithis helps.

My xbox won't turn on

hey guys i was freakin out because i had that same problem.  i didnt want to pay an extra 1000$ just because the stupid repair guys wouldnt tell me the answer.  So look inside your broken usb port, there should be like golden prongs in there.  if they are bent, straighten them and you can turn your xbox back on.  Now this might not be the case with you, but that is how i just solved my problem.  if you have any questions ill try to keep posted and see if i can help further. also you can get me at my gamertag for xbox live.  its volcomxskater37

X box 360

Hi,

Orange means = stand by
Green= its ON
Red= theres a problem (usually power supply overheating)

There could be many reasons as to why your console wont switch on such as broken power switch, faulty / damaged power cord / supply unit, or over heating has damaged the console.

If possible try using teh power cord in another xbox 360 console to eliminate the cable being the problem.

If the problem still exsists all that you can really do from there is send it to the xbox repair center.

You should be able to get it fixed free of charge.

if you have a game or dvd in there you cant get out unplug teh console and remove the face plate. depending on the dvd drive manufacture in your xbox you may / maynot be able to see some small black cogs at teh front of the dvd drive inside the actuall dvd drive unit. spin these with a small techinical screwdriver and the the tray will start to slide out with each spin.

Not very technical or approved but does the job.

hope this helps
