We had the same problem. We had to use HP's printing software. It was called HP Photosmart Essentials. We are using version 3.5. When we went to HP's website to download Photosmart Essentials, it only had version 2.5 for our printer. Our printer, the 5280, is now discontinued so we had to enter another all-in-one printer model that was similar to ours that allowed us to download the 3.5 version. Anyway, best of luck. P.S. - HP isn't what it used to be. I'm considering switching to maybe canon or something. Anyway, peace out.

Here's a support article taken from the HP website regarding alignment of print cartridges. Hope this helps.
Introduction This document provides steps to align print cartridges using the All-in-One control panel or the computer. The appearance of the product varies by model. Aligning print cartridges Follow one of these methods to align print cartridges. NOTE: If the same print cartridge is removed and reinstalled, the product will not prompt to align the print cartridges. The product remembers the alignment values for that print cartridge, so there is no need to realign the print cartridges. Method one: Print an alignment page using the All-in-One control panel When a new cartridge is installed, the product aligns the cartridge. The cartridges can also be aligned any time after you install the software. Aligning the cartridges helps ensure high quality output. Follow the steps to align newly installed cartridges.
  1. When prompted, make sure plain white letter or A4 paper is loaded in the input tray.
  2. Press the button next to OK on the control panel display. The product prints an alignment page. Figure 1: Alignment pagec01369744.gif
  3. Place the alignment page print-side down on the right front corner of the glass. Figure 2: Position the alignment pagec01369745.gif
  4. Press the button next to OK on the control panel display. When the On button stops flashing, the alignment is complete. Remove the page and recycle or discard it.
Method two: Print an alignment page using the computer Follow these steps to align the cartridges from the HP Photosmart software.
  1. Double-click the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon (c01367004.gif ) on the lower right side of the Windows taskbar. The HP Solution Center displays.
  2. In the HP Solution Center, click Settings . Then click Printer Toolbox . The printer Toolbox displays.
  3. Click the Device Services tab.
  4. Click Align the Print Cartridges .
  5. When prompted, make sure plain white letter or A4 paper is loaded in the input tray.
  6. Press the button next to OK on the control panel display. The product prints an alignment page. Figure 3: Printing an alignment pagec01369744.gif

Prints an alignment page when switched on every time

For most HP all-in-ones, the alignment page will print until you complete the alignment process. This will be done whenever a new cartridge is inserted (among other times).

In that case:
If the alignment page was printed on plain white letter- (or A4) sized paper, place the alignment page face down on the scanner with the top right corner on the right, front corner of the scanner glass. Press the Start Scan button and wait until the Power light stops blinking.

Other issues that cause the symptom:
A cartridge that isn't properly seated or is damaged/dirty. Remove the cartridges one at a time and inspect them. Check the contacts for dirt and any tape remaining over the nozzles. If they are good, return them to the printer making sure that they click into place. Otherwise, replace them.

The contacts are dirty. Get some distilled or bottled water and cotton swabs or lint free cloths (coffee filters will work). Remove the cartridges and place them on a clean piece of paper with the contacts up. Unplug the printer while you are working (but after the cartridges are at the replacement position). Dip a swab in the water and squeeze out the excess water. Hold the cartidge by the sides. Wipe the copper contacts (do not touch the nozzles). Do this for all of the cartridges. Then wipe the contacts inside the printer with another damp swab.Allow the contacts 10 minutes to dry before reinstalling the cartridges, closing the access door and plugging in the power cord. Turn on the printer and then scan the alignment page.

The cartridges could be bad. Install new ones. Make sure to remove all of the protective tape. Then insert the cartridges (HP new cartridges) into the correct slot and make sure they click into place. Again scan the alignment page when it prints.

If the problem persists, try a power reset. Turn off the printer with the power button. Unplug all of the cords (electrical and data). Relocate the printer to another outlet; preferably the outlet should be on a different circuit. Plug the power cord into the wall outlet. Load the printer with A4 or letter-sized white paper. Now plug the power cord into the printer and turn it on. Do the complete alignment.

If the problem still persists, the unit needs service.

I hope this helps.

7. Close the print cartridge door.
IMPORTANT: Wait a few minutes while the alignment page is printed automatically.

I am tryihng to print on a CD as per the instructions which came with my 5280. It is not happening, and is very unclear about how you put the disk in, and what is the blue collar for?

The blue collar is when you are printing on the smaller CD/DVD's and you snap it into place. Most people just use the regular size cds so you won't need the collar.

You are not the first to be less than impressed with hp's directions on this function. That have recently released a video clip that can be very helpful.

I have a hpdeskjet f2180 and need to change the ink cartridges. How do I get to the cartridges to change them !

Installing print cartridges
  1. Make sure the HP All-in-One is on. CAUTION: If the HP All-in-One is off when you open the print cartridge door to access the print cartridges, the HP All-in-One will not release the cartridges for changing. You might damage the HP All-in-One if the print cartridges are not docked safely when you try to remove them.
  2. Open the print cartridge door. Figure 1: Opening the print cartridge door c00906461.jpg Make sure the print carriage moves to the center. If it does not move to the center, turn the device off and then turn it back on again.
  3. Remove the tape from both cartridges. Figure 2: Removing the tape from a cartridge c00651128.gif CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or re-tape the cartridges. Figure 3: Copper-colored contacts c00651129.gif
  4. Hold the cartridges with the HP logo on top.
  5. Insert the tri-color cartridge in the left cartridge slot and the black cartridge in the right cartridge slot. Figure 4: Carriage slots c00853116.jpg Figure 5: Inserting the tri-color cartridge in the left slot c00853117.jpg
  6. Make sure you push the cartridges in firmly until they snap into place. Figure 6: Pushing the cartridge in firmly c00853118.jpg Figure 7: Tri-color cartridge and black cartridge correctly installed c00853119.jpg
  7. Close the print cartridge door. Figure 8: Closing the print cartridge door c00906462.jpg
Aligning print cartridges The HP All-in-One prompts you to align cartridges every time you install or replace a print cartridge. You can also align the print cartridges at any time from the control panel or by using the software you installed with the HP All-in-One. Aligning the print cartridges ensures high-quality output. NOTE: If you remove and reinstall the same print cartridge, the HP All-in-One will not prompt you to align the print cartridges. The HP All-in-One remembers the alignment values for that print cartridge, so you do not need to realign the print cartridges. To align newly installed print cartridges
  1. Make sure you have letter or A4 unused plain white paper loaded in the input tray. The HP All-in-One prints a print cartridge alignment sheet. NOTE: If you have colored paper loaded in the input tray when you align the print cartridges, the alignment will fail. Load unused plain white paper into the input tray, and then try the alignment again.
  2. Load the print cartridge alignment sheet print side down on the left front corner of the glass with the top of the page to the left. Figure 9: Loading the alignment sheet c00906464.jpg
  3. Press the Scan (c00906465.jpg ) button. The HP All-in-One aligns the print cartridges. Recycle or discard the print cartridge alignment sheet.
