Question about Garmin GPS

Open Question

I have a garmin 76 map gps and after it is being used for about 5 minutes or so it freezes up. The screen goes blank and leaves a line from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen and no matter what buttons i push it will not reset itself. I have to remove the batteries and reinstall them in order to get it to work again and then after five minutes it freezes up again. Can you advise what the problem may be?

I had the same problem so i checked on line with Garmin support and they sent me a link to download and then i downloaded it to my gps. Just explain to Garmin exactly what you had listed here as your problem then give them a day or so. Had something to do with satellites having moved and your unit needs to be reset. I don't have the link now otherwise i'd email it to you.

    Good luck.

SOURCE: Unit shut down

I have run into the same problem and it may be related to the WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) feature. Try disabling this feature (under MAIN MENU / Setup). I used this receiver overseas (Asia and Europe) last year for 35 days straight with no problems. During this time WAAS was disabled as none of these satellites are visible overseas. The problem occurred intermittently prior to the overseas trip, and has reoccurred after returning. I was running into the same problem this past weekend and noticed the screen blanking out (with the vertical line) shortly after differential corrections were applied to the GPS signals. I disabled the WAAS and let the receiver run for over an hour. The problem did not return. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Garmin GPSmap 76 not acquiring satellites

I had the same problem? GPSmap76S was hung up trying to AutoLocate. It just couldn’t find itself, and it just stopped working all of a sudden one day, while I was traveling. I spoke with Garmin about the problem, and they advised me of an ongoing problem with WAAS. I was told that I should "Disable" WAAS, because the signal from the WAAS satellites had been changed by the government, and Garmin had not yet put out a software update to address the problem, on the 76 units, anyway. Also said that an update "should" come out, in the future, however, no commitment or promise on that. Evidently, once your unit hits one of the WAAS signals, it scrambles up the receiver in the GPS, because mine sure went crazy. The support guy also said, that if this did not correct the problem, I might also want to try a "Master Reset". So here’s what happened.
I disabled WAAS, but this did not correct the problem. The unit was still lost out there somewhere, trying to AutoLocate, so I ended up doing the “Master Reset”. Please read up on this procedure before trying it, and understand that you “will loose” any settings that you might have made to the GPS, along with all waypoints, routes, tracks, etc., however, my maps actually remained in tact? This procedure will actually set the unit back, just as it was when it originally came from the factory. Once completed, you will then have to allow the unit to initialize it's self again, just as you did when the unit was new. If you have forgotten about doing that, it simply means that you need to set the unit outdoors and leave it “on” for a while (15 – 20 minutes), until it actually AutoLocates it’s self, or locks in on your current position. Once this is done, re-do your setting preferences, back to the way you had them before the Master Reset. At the very least, you’ll have to re-set it to the correct time zone, and tell it about daylight savings time. Note: It’s a very good idea to go thru first, and jot down your page settings and main menu settings, before doing this procedure, or the screens may not look familiar to you, once the unit resets. You think you’ll remember them all, but you won’t. But whatever, once you have done the “Reset” and “Initialization”, you must now hook the GPS up to the computer and reload your waypoints, routes, etc, back to the GPS. You did have them saved on your computer, didn’t you? Hope so… If so, you should now be good to go…………….
My unit now works like a champ, good as new, just not as accurate, due to WAAS being turned off. I still don't know if the WAAS issue, was part of the problem or not, but I do know that the Master Reset got the unit back to working immediately, allowing it to locate itself almost instantly. What a relief…………..it’s a little work, but it takes much less time than it took you to read this post…………..
Hey, when all else fails, call Garmin 1-800-800-1020. They are good guys and willing to help, in fact, I would advise you to call them before you do anything, so you can describe to them, exactly what your unit is doing. I am only relating my situation and what happened to me. Your situation may be different…….

Sometimes the screen goes blank and after 5 -10 min will let you turn the unit back on

A Garmin Nuvi 1300 that won't start, freezes on 'loading maps,' or is acting erratically is symptomatic of having corrupt firmware.

To correct this, I recommend backing up your favorites, clearing all user data, and if it still is stuck, then updating your Nuvi firmware.

Follow these three steps to take to get your Garmin Nuvi 1300 running like new:

  1. Back up your Favorites.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset.
  3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

I hope that helps.

Screen goes blank except for a black line

I had the same problem with my 76S. Called Garmin to send it back for service. They said it was a problem with new WAAS signals that causes the freeze/black line. Disabling WAAS using menu/system solved it for now. They are working on a software update Real Soon Now.

Garmin GPSmap 76 locks up once satellite acquisition is complete.

Does the screen go blank with a faint vertical line (top to bottom)? If so, I had the same problem (blank screen, vertical line). After speaking with Garmin, I was told to make sure I was using the latest software version, and to turn off the WAAS function. Disable it for now, because the WAAS signal, coming from the satellite, has changed, and Garmin has not yet published a remedy to correct this problem. A fix should be out in a software update, sometime in the future, hopefully. I also did the software update, to the latest version 4.0. The unit performs perfectly now, however, the accuracy is not quite as good, due to the lack of WAAS. Good Luck!!

What you said does make sense. When you have your unit in simulator mode, the GPS receiver is turned off, so it is not receiving signals from the satellites. The strange signal from the WAAS satellite must be what has been messing things up. Good Luck!

Garmin GPS-V freezes up

The update from Garmin seems to have cured the problem!! All I did was the reload.

Thanks velomaster!

I've had my Garmin GPS V for almost four years and loved it ... until the dreaded "black line" showed up. I considered replacing the unit but couldn't find anything that would give me the features the GPS V gave me (elevation, ground speed, grade change) and I didn't need a color screen display as an alternative. I'd even bid on a few replacement units on ebay. I was just about ready to bite the bullet, send it in to Garmin and swallow the $125 rebuilt charge when I ran across this thread. After the update it hasn't locked up and as a bonus I have more detail than I had before!

If you have a GPS V you really do need to do this.

GPS screen went blank

My problem exactly. Unit would start up, acquire satellites, then the screen would go blank with a single vertical line. Unit would not respond to buttons or even turn off. Unit works fine after I did the reset:

- w/unit OFF, press and hold QUIT+DOWN+MENU
- press and release the power button, release DOWN, keep holding QUIT+MENU for 5 seconds.
- unit prompts something like: "erase all data;" choose yes.
- you will lose waypoints, etc.

Go to the Garmin support area for details.
