While a simple format is usually enough (depending on the purpose of wiping the drive), if it is critical that you wipe the drive, then, you need a third-party tool. http://www.disk-partition.com/help/wipe-data.html

IF you have the XP installation CD you can easily do that, Just set your BIOS to boot from the CDrom then put the XP CD on your CD drive then restart the computer , so your computer will automatically boot from the XP installation CD then on that process you will have an option to format the entire hard drive that you have using the XP CD installation, then just let the installation finish...

Hi to erase the hard drive you will need a windows disc, on a dell you put the disc in the drive, reboot and press F12 to get a boot menu. boot from the CD/DVD drive and follow the install windows process and when you see the choices of drive space to install on select delete partition. You asked how to erase the drive it is now erased . to reinstall windows continue with the CDs instructions, exit if you just want to dispose of the PC with no personal info on it.

Have all disks that came with machine, can't find info to reinstall windows XP Home

most machines sold recently don't have an installation disc, but rather set aside another partition to format, and repair installations. When booting on the machine, try pressing F8, or F12, F2... I'm not exactly sure which Function key it is, but one of those will pop up a boot loader menu, where you can reinstall windows from here on out.

You will need to purchase a legal copy of windows XP and install the software. Installing will erase everything on your computer so make sure you back up all of your information.

You can purchase Windows XP Home (cheapest) or Pro at newegg.com or any electronics store.

Error message NTLDR missing on formatted hard drive

You need to either reinstall windows, or take the hard drive out, hook it up as a spare drive to a working computer and copy NTDLR to the root of the laptop hard drive. It would be much easier to reinstall windows. You can always use the recovery portion of Windows, but if I were you I would just do a format and reinstall. NTDLR is just a startup file for Windows XP, that does not mean your hard drive is gone or anything. Please don't forget to rate!..Thanks

No windows xp

Hi Dean,

I can Understand your situation.when this happens it means your system restore files have become damaged. This could be because you don't defragment your computer regularly, you have a virus or malware or your hard drive has just aged a little.

You can either repair or reinstall windows. Windows System Restore isn't actually that good in XP as the problem is still there, just the system restore masks it.

To reinstall please visit www.lopezwebz.com for a guide.

You may want to "repair" windows...

Basically it pretends to reinstall Windows by replacing all the broken Windows files... it will NOT erase your drivers, software thats installed or any documents so is 100% safe.

You can find a guide on how to do that at http://www.windowsxphome.windowsreinstall.com/installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.ht...

Compaq Deskpro EN contant restarting when attempting to load XP

Last time this happened to me, I had to reformat and reinstall windows. I tried all those modes, and I even tried the windows repair. None of that worked, I just did a complete new install. All of the data will be lost, if you do this.

My advice, if you need some of the data on that hard drive, you need to hook the drive up to another computer and backup what you need.

Or buy another hard drive, install windows on the new drive. Now slave the old and backup the data.
