Question about Hard Drives
I have a SimpleDrive external hard drive, model #96300-40001-001, 80g capacity. I have had it for several years, but recently it began disconnecting while in use. I do not keep it on all the time, only when I need to transfer files. I tried to replace the USB cable but when I did the new cables (I tried two different ones) seemed to make things worse. With one I just got a message stating that my computer could not read the connected disk and with the other the blue light (signaling activity) came on and stayed on (it usually flickers and dances while reading the disk). I am using a Mac Mini Intel Core Duo 166mhz with 2g RAM.
I've wondered if perhaps it takes a special cord, but the writing above the USB site just says USB.
I feel the problem can be something else as well.
The message "Photo Gallery can't open this picture because it might have been deleted or is in a location that is not available" can be because the Photo Gallery program that you use to view pictures in your computer.
First, try this, right click on the picture and click on "Open With". This will give you a list of all programs.
Here, you can select "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" and place a check in the check box below that says "Always use this Program.." and click OK. See if this works.
I would also like to know if you are able to open other files on this drive except picture files.
Also, the document that you are trying to open, what's the file type for this document.
You can try one more thing that will help us to isolate the issue.
Please note the next step we are going to do is just a diagnostic step and we will revert back to the original settings after this step.
If not, then try the fixes provided by other friends above.
Even if it works after MSCONFIG, that will show that there is some other program/spyware creating this problem and in that case try uninstalling any recent programs you installed and Run the complete virus and spyware scan.
Please let know if you need any further help.

Plug it into another computer if possible, clear ALL files on it.
You must of been sending something to it when you flicked the switch, they would normally go off straight away.
(Backup on the other computer first)
If this does not work then you may want to see if you can see a usb stick in your USB ports. If you can it's a fault with the harddrive, nothing else you can do.

SOURCE: USB external hard drive driver
If you go into Computer Management and go to Storage > Disk Management. You'll see the partition there. Right click on it and assign it a drive letter. You will be able to access it from there.

Run the Western Digital diagnostic utility on your drive to determine if there are hardware problems with your drive.
Hope this helps.
