High definition audio controller This device cannot start. (Code 10)

If you run into the error "This device cannot start. Code 10 (often followed by a driver identifier, for example "This device cannot start. Code 10 in audio driver"), here is what it means.

The Windows error "This device cannot start. Code 10 or "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" is a hardware error that most commonly means that you have a bad, missing, or incompatible device driver. So, for example, "This device cannot start. Code 10 in audio driver" means that you have a bad or missing or incompatible driver for your sound card.

The technical explanation for this message, according to Microsoft, is this:

"If the device has a FailReasonString value in its hardware key, that string appears as the error message. The driver or enumerator puts this registry string value there. If there is no FailReasonString in the hardware key, you receive the following error message:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

What does that mean in plain English? It means that if the device which is throwing the error has added its own custom error text to your Windows system when the device was installed, then when the device encounters an error, you will see the custom error message specific to that device. But if it doesn't have its own custom error message, then Windows uses its own generic error message for devices, which is "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

Microsoft recommends that when this happens, you click "Update Driver" to update the drivers for the device. You can also start the Windows troubleshooting wizard by going to the general properties tab of the device, and clicking on "Troubleshoot".

Before doing this, be sure that you have the correct and most up-to-date versions of the driver(s) for that device. You can also try uninstalling and reinstalling the device, using the disk which came with it.

Finally, you can go to the website of the device's manufacturer, and check their downloads or support section for current, up-to-date drivers.

Click start control panel administrative tools computer management then select event viewer this may vary depending on what operating system you have
extend the events there you will see errors in red you will no what exactly what the error was and at what time it occured

you might be able work your way through the problem
error code 31
On occasion, computers running Windows 7 will display Error Code 31,
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device may appear.
While some error codes can be misleading and take you on a trip through a troubleshooting maze, Error Code 31 means exactly what it states.
The problem deals directly with the device attached to your computer, not the computer's operating system.
This is good news because by instantly knowing the cause of an error, troubleshooting time is drastically reduced. It is also one reason Code 31 type errors can be handled faster than most errors with a few quick steps.

Visit the Microsoft Compatibility Center (the link Below)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx
and verify that the attached device is compatible with your computer's operating system.
If it is, continue; if it is not, skip all steps and install another device that is compatible so that it can work correctly with your computer's operating system.
Click the "Start" button and then click "Control Panel."

Click "System and Security" located under System and then click "Device Manager."
Click the device you want to update and then double click its name.
Click the "Driver" tab and then click "Update Driver."
Enter your administrator password or provide confirmation, if prompted.
If you computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it.
Rather doing a driver hunt which can take hours

Windows XP/Vista/7/8

it might take some time being a freeware driver solution
Note: it will find all of your outdated drivers

This will automatically search for and find the correct driver you will have to update every driver individually once you update you might be asked whether you want to restart or make a system restore point.

Click no to both of these then continue updating each driver free then restart once all of the drivers have been updated.

Nothing happens when i put in a dvd or a CD. Under the driver information, it says that i´am having a error code 10.

error code 10 = either the device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. this code may also have a manufacturer specific error message associated with it, depending on the device.
Solutions, check the device connections, and check and/or update the drivers.

Error code 37

Hi there
The Code 37 error may occur when the concerned device is not connected to the system correctly and when its driver is faulty. A code 10 error is common when you add or remove USB devices or video & sound cards to and from your PC. When these errors occur, you may receive the error message given below.
Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)
To resolve code 37 errors, first ensure that your device is properly connected to your system. For instance, check all the cables of your printer or check that your sound or video adaptor is properly seated in its slot.
Try to remove and reinstall the device, and run the Add New Hardware Wizard from the Control Panel to see if Windows detects and installs it. If this does not resolve the issue, then update the device driver by performing the following steps:
  1. Open Control Panel and select System.
  2. In the System Properties dialog box, select Hardware tab, and then click on the Device Manager tab.
  3. Scroll down the Device Manager window and identify the faulty hardware from the list.
  4. Right-click on the hardware and select Update Driver.
  5. Follow the screen instructions to resolve the error.
If these steps do not resolve your error, then the problem might be with your device. Get it checked by an authorized technician.

Good luck

Error code 10-FC06-000D while using recovery cd (backup)

Error code 10 XXXXXXX is related to hardware. It is default code generated by device manager when the operating system failed to determine which specific error code to return after an error occurs.
Error code 10 error pertains mainly to hardware issues and to compatibility issues between hardware and the software.
To troubleshoot the code 10, go to control panel>system> device manager and check if any of the hardware display a yellow “!” or a red “stop”.
1). Update the hardware device driver from either Microsoft or device vendor web site.
If the device is preinstalled on the computer, visit the computer manufacturer’s website.
2). Make sure the device is enabled in the computer BIOS. You need the system documentation, if you don’t know how to do it.
3). Disable any advanced feature of the device.
4). Install the most up to date service pack and any other updates.
