Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Agitator problem Top agitator does not agitate. It is loose and spins freely when spun by hand. The bottom agitator works fine. Sounds like a simple fix, but I wanted to check.

Check and see if it spins freely in both directions. If it does, this means that your "dogs" are worn out in the top agitator. This is an easy fix. You just get the new ones (usually 10$ or less), pull the top cover off the agitator, then pull the center cap off inside of the agitator. Then you just remove the center bolt and pull the whole top agitator off. You will see the 4 plastic dogs right on the top of the agitator.

How to remove the top part of the agitator of a roper model ras8445kq0

Often agitator tops do spin somewhat freely, for safety reasons. Most of the work gets done at the bottom, anyway. Unless your clothes are getting tied in knots, I wouldn't worry about it.

But if you want to look, they're usually not that hard to remove. I can't picture yours off the top of my head, but look for a cap/cover/cup on top that can be removed by hand, and there might be a bolt underneath that. There's usually a lot of friction in addition to the bolt holding it in place, so you might use an old towel slipped under the agitator and cinched to give you more leverage/grip.

Good luck.

Whirlpool washer agitator not working

You most likely need to replace the dogs in the agitator, two piece agitator design. It should spin one way and catch the other on the teeth of the dogs. It will spin freely either way when the dogs are wore out. This is for the top half of the agitator, bottom is fitted to transmission shaft. You pop the top cover, remove the 7/16 bolt and both halves together to change dogs of agitator. Pull halves apart to change dogs. Fairly simple.

There is a video at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html that will walk you thru the replacement of the agitator dogs, this is a common problem with this style washer.

The Top portion of the Agitator won't spin.

This is a very simple fix, that's inexpensive and requires no special tools. It sounds like you need to replace your agitator dogs. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r823955-replacing_agitator_dogs

The dogs are part of the agitator cam assembly under the auger (top portion). These little plastic pieces do wear out with age, causing the slippage you are talking about. Replacements are available at appliancepartspros.com for about $5. For a little bit more, you can purchase the entire cam replacement kit (which includes the dogs, cam and seals) for around $11 or $12. Use your model number to begin your search criteria and locate these parts under the "Agitator Parts" section.

If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

Washer won't agitate

I saw this happen once and you know what it was? A loose connection!. I pushed in the timer's molex block and it worked! It musta vibrated out the socket somehow. You must flip up the console to access the controls.

Washer fills and spins but does not agitate

Im sorry to say, it sounds like the transmission in the washer may have gone out, the unit it self sits at the bottem of the main agitator shaft under the the tub, you may be able to have this replaced, but shop around for the right price.

Agitator moves slowly on wash cycle/not at all on spin cycle

it sounds like the dogs are worn. try twisting the agitator post by hand,it should move freely in one direction then lock up going the other.its a pretty easy fix if they are.pry off the top of the agitator post off then remove the cap inside, there is a bolt that holds the post down.i'm pretty sure it's 7/16 in. once the bolt is loose, lift the whole agitator out of machine and with your hand inside post turn it upside downand let the dog holder slide out.watch how the dogs fit into the holder, replace with new dogs and reverse the removal process.
if the machine wont spin, check the lid switch. thats usually the cause of a no spin situation.other than that a wet vac is your best bet.hope that helps.
