Dc jack repair

Hi,
we are trying to repair a dc jack for our laptop, but I am wondering if it is worth the hassle because buying a new one is relatively inexpensive. What is there to repair in an old one if the laptop does not power on? I have heard mention of the center pin (data pin) is this the main thing to give out?
Thanks,
Joe

On a laptop it must have the exact power volatge and if it has a center pin then you must get it from the manufacture but here is an idea if you can find a place that takes in old computers and laptops maybe you can ask them for a replacement it may take a little time to get it if they don't have one on hand but the way all these new laptops and computers coming out people are getting rid of there old ones..... and most of these places also referbish computers for schools but you need the location for the recycling drop offs,,,

For $75.00 bucks I wouldn't even open it up... lol Thats a good deal if they do a good job. Thats a fair price too I charge like $65 - $80 and hour depending on what is being done. remembering of course we often in actuality often work on something for 6 hours, and only charge 2 - 3, because a job is worth what a job is worth.

I have a hp zv5000 that a friend gave me. I don't know the history of this particular laptop. I recently bought a new battery for it so I could finally try it out. When I turn on the power, i can hear...

It seems to be a "dead" motherboard -- very expensive to replace.

Can you return the battery to the store, explaining that your computer died?

Failing that, try to sell the brand-new battery on eBay (or CraigsList.org)

Separately, try to sell the AC adapter on eBay.

Remove the disk-drive from the computer,
and give it (and the files that it contains) back to your friend.

Separately, try to sell the laptop "for parts" on eBay.
Somebody may want to buy the LCD screen & the CD/DVD drive & the wireless adapter, and would take the whole laptop, in order to "scavenge" those components.

Check the Leds on laptop. Try to turn on the laptop with just the a/c adapter. Disconnect battery,a/c adapter and drain flea power by holding power button for 15 second. Connect /ac adapter and check. Disconnect harddrive and memory from laptop.Reconnect and try to reboot.Possible issue with motherboard.

HP ZV 5000 AC PROBLEM

Hello,

You either have a bad adapter or a broken power jack in the laptop. To check the adapter use a multimeter set to voltage and connect one lead to the center in and the other to the outside metal contact. You should get a reading from 18 to about 26 volts. If you get no reading then the adapter needs to be replaced. If you get the correct reading then the power jack in the laptop will need to be replaced. If yo are ok with electronics repair you can get the jacks from Ebay.com if not your local computer repair shop should be able to do it for you.

I hope this helps, If so please rate my solution,

Power Supply Port Burnout

1) You need to replace the DC Power Jack. This is the port on the laptop where the AC adapter (Charger) plugs in. {Power port}

Most so called repair shops won't touch this. (Notice I stated so called) They will want to replace the entire motherboard. {Geeks are us}

A bona fide computer repair tech can replace the DC Power Jack. Cost of jack? Around $10. Repair bill? From $50 to $125.

[Entire laptop needs to be disassembled, down to the bare motherboard in the tech's hand. Precise de-soldering, and soldering skills, are needed for the DC Power Jack replacement. Reassemble laptop.

This gives you an idea of what is involved,

DC Power Jack replacement,

2) Replace the AC adapter. If the AC adapter has a separate cable from the power unit, to the laptop, then by all means just replace it. May be more of a headache, then just buying a universal AC adapter.

Barring none of the above is a feasible approach for you, and you wish to save the information on the harddrive, of both your laptop, and your brother's, I would suggest an economical external enclosure.

Remove the harddrive, and install it in the external enclosure. The enclosure has a USB cable, and is plugged into any available USB port on a separate computer.
(Desktop?)

The HP Pavilion ZE5000 series of laptops, (Business Notebook's), use an IDE (PATA) harddrive.
It is 2.5 inches across in width.
(Desktop harddrives are 3 and 1/2 inches across in width)

This is one example of a 2.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

To remove the harddrive, I'll need to know the exact Product Number.
(P/N)
This is on the bottom of the laptop in a white Service Tag.
(DO NOT give out the Serial Number. S/N)

Depends on if it cracked the motherboard with it. If it did it will have to be replaced as well.

For all those with the ZV series power jack problem, I have replaced a few of these jacks and it is not an easy job unless you are an engineer.

The entire laptop needs to be disassembled, all the panels need to be removed, including the keyboard and you almost have to remove the motheboard.

Even when you eventually gain access to the offending part, you will need to be competent in using a soldering iron to remove the jack without damaging the printed board, then clear the holes so the new jack can be fitted.

While you are doing all this, you need to remember that the circuitry is static sensitive. This means that you can kill your motherboard just by touching it.

When you have finally finished the job, unless you have been pretty smart, you'll end up with a box full of different size screws and you won't know what goes where!

With the ZVs I have repaired, I usually supply a short jumper lead that plugs into the power jack on the back of the laptop. This is two or three inches long with a cable power socket on one end and a power plug on the other. This means that the user can leave the power plug plugged into the laptop all the time and just disconnect and reconnect the power unit from the other end of the patch lead instead of wearing out the laptop's power jack.

I guess you could try running and soldering new individual wires, from point to point where they come fromand go to... or try to obtain a replacement cable part from drive manufacturer. But with CD's being so inexpensive is it worth the time and hassle? I myself would get a new one.
