That is called the "blue screen of death". Another words your system crashed. Did you download any software, music, drivers or screen savers? If anything, what exactly did you download. If you just opened a web site, sounds like your may have gotten a virus. Try restarting and try to boot into "safe mode". Run your anti-virus making sure you turn off system restore first and delete all internet temp. files/ cookies/ and history. Delete your recycle bin/ restart and see if that takes care of the problem.
If you still can't boot without the BOD, try doing a system restore to the point before this started. Make sure to turn sys. restore back on once you solve the problem. If the blue screen comes up again, as soon as you see it hit pause on your keyboard and write down what it says; especially the error code; 0x0000008 etc.

How to shut down a computer?

1. Close any applications you have running, such as your email or instant messaging service, by clicking the "X" in the upper-right corner of each program page.

2. Left-click your mouse on the Start button, typically found in the bottom-left corner of your computer screen.

3. Highlight the option to "Shut Down" and left-click your mouse again to initiate the proper shutdown process.

4. Wait until your computer logs you off of any applications, your computer screen goes blank and the power light turns off before you turn off your monitor or close your laptop.

My Dell Inspiron 1521 has had a battery problem for a couple of weeks but just taking the battery out and only using the adapter worked just fine. One night the computer shut itself down twice. The next...

Hi,
Try running the diagnostics on the computer. You may need to repeat some of the steps that you have already done to initiate the same.

1. Remove the battery and the Ac adapter from the system
2. Press the power button for 10 seconds
3. Reinsert the battery and connect the Ac adapter
4. While holding down the FN key on the keyboard press the power button.

If the system beeps in a series on 3-3-3 or 3-3-4 the system is ok and there could be a problem with the screen.

If the system beeps in some other code . revert to the post and we would let you know where the problem is .

I was shutting down my toshiba laptop, its now frozen.

If nothing else works remove the battery, leave it for 5 mins then replace it and it will start as normal. Yyou will get an error message usually saying it was not shut down correctly and it may do a system scan but unless there is a real problem with it that will restart it. Ive had to do that twice with mine in the last year.

Screen went black

When you close the lid, there is a small pin that engages the case and flips a switch to tell the laptop the case has been closed. The monitor will ALWAYS turn off then, because otherwise, the heat build up would burn the screen! Do not try to defeat this, replacing an LCD screen is usually more expensive than the value of the laptop!

Now, that all being said (and please remember), the situation you have now is (hopefully) just that the laptop tried/succeeded in going into ACPI "suspend" or "hibernate" mode.

1. Remove all cables and 10/100. Remove all USB devices. Just leave the PSU (AC power supply) connected.

2. Press the power button firmly, JUST once. Wait. And I mean WAIT, because some laptops can take 2 minutes or more to come out of suspend/hibernate, if they were very busy at the time it was shut down.

3. If the LCD screen lights up. you are done. But if it does not light up now, then proceed to step 4.

4. Press and HOLD the power button down for 10 seconds. This forces the laptop to shut down completely, even from suspend/hibernation. Some unsaved files may be lost, but tghe laptop goes cold, so you can start ACPI over again.

5. After a few minutes, press the power button again, firmly, just ONCE and for 1 second max. Laptop should start up OK.

6. Once it starts up, go to START MENU/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL/POWER SETTINGS and search for the "hibernation" tab. Turn hibernation OFF. your laptop obviously has some problems or lack of responsiveness with hibernation (most do). Use suspend, instead. It is much safer,. faster, and still does a good job of saving HDD and LCD wear. Please let me know how this goes for you, there are other more detailed problems that may be involved here, but I suspect this is most likely.
