Smelly water from door dispensor

Kenmore elite bottom freezer refrigerator is less than a year old. replaced the water filter at 6 months and a couple of months later, the water at the door dispensor began getting smellier & smellier giving off a strong moldy/sulfur odor with the first glass and less as i continue to dispense. wait a few hours and grab another glass of water and the smell is back. ice from automatic ice maker in the bottom freezer, however, smells & tastes just fine as does the tap water from my sink. model #: 795.77242602. any ideas?

    tech master,

thanks for the reply. it doesn't taste like plastic in the water, but will add baking soda to fridge to see if it helps. wife & kids think it tastes/smells metallic, almost like rusty water. to me, it smells bad, but can't pinpoint the exact smell so i went with moldy. tap water from faucet is still fine.

also, smell appears to be getting stronger and occuring sooner. i'm down to 15-20 minutes between dispensings when the smell comes back so i have to assume its getting worse.

any idea where the plastic reservoir is located on this model? tried to locate it on searsparts online, but no luck.

will also call sears to see if its still under warranty and have them take a look too (for free).

    thanks again,

    FTjoe

    dear wecandoit

this sounds promising. i am definately going to try this as soon as i can find the 2 screws.

i opened the left door and removed the 3 shelves, but don't see the screws. are they behind the gasket at the top and/or bottom?

  • joe Mar 15, 2009

still searching for the 2 screws (2 caps actually) as you described, but i still don't see them. i have not pulled the gasket off, but there is nothing obvious when i take out the shelves and look at the bottom as you described. maybe they changed the style or you've got a different model that is similar, but not exact?

I had the same problem. Drove me crazy and cost me about 5 filters at $50 a pop until I found the solultion. Water in the Sears/LG refrigerator that I have (french door trio) goes through the filter then into a container on the left front door of the refrigerator. That container stores the water so it can get cold and it also equalizes the flows in the system so that when you put your glass under the spigot the flow is steady and the water is cold. Problem is .... this tank can build up with algae/slime/foul tasting stuff. Since it is after the filter, no matter how many times you change the filter it will have no impact on the water in this container. That is why if you use the water spigot a lot, the water seems to get a little better (as the tank water gets diluted) but as soon as you don't use it for several hours or more, back comes the smelly water again. Solution for me was to remove the plastic panel on the inside of the left front door and clean the plastic bottle. It is pretty easy to remove with 2 screws and easy to pull off the hoses. I filled is with a little clorox and water and swished it around for several minutes then drained and rinsed it. Then I filled it again with a little clorox (like an ounce or two max) and put the container back into the fridge. Once in the fridge, I ran fridge water through the front water dispenser for about a gallon or so. This flushed out the chlorine in the plastic container as well as the lines between the container and the spigot. After about a half hour of work, my great tasting water in the fridge is back again. I've checked the taste on this water for several weeks now and no plastic/odor/bad tasting water any more. Hope this helps.

You can get at the container by removing the two circular white plastic plugs near the bottom inside of the door. Behind the two pop out white plugs are screws. Remove the screws and pull the plastic cover off carefully not to damage the 3 press in tabs on the top of the cover. All the tubing, container and solenoid are behind the clastic cover on the bottom of the door.

In the refrigeration side, there is a small round filter that you twist off by hand. Replace with the same filter and screw on by hand and do not make it too tight or it can be hard to remove later on.

Check to make sure water line valve is fully open near sink, make sure no crimps in water line, replace water filter if it is old (ie, more than 6 months).

It is definitely the water filter. With the hardness of the water from our county I have to change our filter every 6 months. After replacing the filter be sure that it is seated well. It can leak if it is not fully engaged. Run water through the dispenser until the air is out.

1 year old Kenmore Elite Trio Refridgerator not cooling

There are a lot of things that could be the source of the problem... is there no cooling at all going on in the freezer? Is the back wall of the freezer cold? It could be anything from a fan, to the compressor, to the control board... you need a technician.

I would get on the phone with Sears, and explain the continuing problems you have been having, and they may agree to cover service.

The water does come out slow on these models. I know you said you replaced your filter with a new one and it is still not any faster.

I own a Kenmore Elite #596 73503 201. I have not changed my filter for approximately 18 months and when I timed how long it took to fill a 2 Cup measuring cup (liquid measure) it took: less than 45 seconds. Can you test yours and post back how long it takes with your fridge?

Water has stopped coming out of the filtered water dispenser

I just had this same problem and finally figured it out. The water in the line was frozen because my freezer was turned to 6 (note on inside of freezer says recommended temp is 4) so I turned the freezer to 4 and the refrigerator to 3. Next day the water was flowing.

Hope this fixes yours,

I replaced my "entire" ice cube maker (tube, hoses, water pump, ice maker) and it still pooled water at the bottom. I removed the back panel in the freezer and noticed the ciols go through a defrost cycle and water forms in tray under coils. I removed the lower panel on rear of fridge -and found a drain hose near the water solenoid/pump. I blew compressed air into the hose and hopefully unblocked it so it can drain into the pan not the freezer.
