Hi, I have the same problem and have read loads of comments about solving it.
I've got a Sony DVD RW DW-U18A, remedys included reinstaling drivers (
dosent work), flashing firmware (no need), replace drive or have mended
(drive ok).
Loads of remarks about XP not supporting DVD burning, this may be true but
if your PC came with a drive installed there is also third party software
installed, if you have added a drive you should also have installed the
software that came with it, this is also not the problem.
System Restore will work as long as you go back to the original instalation
and then turn off automatic updates, this is hardly acceptable.
After far to much messing about I've got it down to one of Microsofts
critical updates, problem is which one! Microsoft have a fix ( Imapi.sys
5.1.2600.2505 ) but you have to PAY for it from Tech support. Rather than
potentially damage your system trying things that dont work, email Microsoft
and complain

You might try running the Nero infotool on the drive to see if it supports
DVD+R media, my Liteon DVD-ROM drive does not support DVD+R/RW media..
#
The firmware update could help if it was intended to better address media
compatability issues with the drive.. The Nero infotool should be run before
and after the FW update to see if media compatibility has been affected..
Also, in Nero check the recorder tab and click choose recorder, make sure
you don't have the virtual image recorder selected (used to burn ISO's to the
HD)..
You may just need to review Nero's instructions and experiment..

After finaglng around again and again, using the Nero software, I set Nero's
option button on DVD (instead of CD/DVD -- thought I'd try copying a CD to
DVD) and had a success test run copying a file that was burned to HD first
by Nero. The drive was recognized as DVD and acted accordingly. A small hill
conquered, but now I feel confident to boldly go forth and try other
DVD-burning projects.

What type of connection are you using? Is this internal or external? What
type of board do you have? Have you update the sony to the newest firmware?

Also I have had many sony drives in my time and they seem to report
themselves as a cd-drive if there is a cd in there and the same for a dvd
drive.

Similar problem: Installed Lite-On 16X DVD?? R/??RW Drive replacing CD-RW
drive on desktop running XP Home. No problem with DVD playback, but when I
try to burn to DVD+R (using bundled Nero software), I get message it is
wrong type of disc. Works fine when I insert CD. (Microsoft troubleshooting
& support.microsoft articles mainly address playback problems.)

DL'd a zip file with latest firmware update from the Lite-On site, but have
not installed yet. Should this even be a factor? XP determines device is
working properly and there are no hardware changes or updates.
