I sent this question to Sony, who didn't want to help me. So, until I purchase another (non sony) vcr, I have a problem
For about a year now (from time to time) the remote for the VCR stops functioning. When this happensI try the controls on the VCR and they all work. I've removed the batteries from the remote then put them in, still nothing. I've put in new batteries. I've put the remote right up to the infrared receiver on the VCR, still nothing. After about 15 minutes it starts to work again, but slowly. Slowly as in I have to hold the buttons down longer, then after 10 minutes or so it works 100% again. This is very annoying and usually happens every other day. Any ideas? VCR: SLV-795HF Remote: RMT-V202
Except availability of specific remotes is sporadic at best. - Reinhart

Try cleaning the battery contacts. Also, did you happen to accidentally spill anything on the remote sometime in the past?
You can look for a cheaper source for the correct replacement remote at # The remotes they sell are going to be used, but they should be guaranteed in decent cosmetic and working condition. - Reinhart

Don`t clean the carbon coated rubber too much as the carbon goes away and remote is toast. I use a #2 pencil eraser VERY GENTLY on buttons. Get some good lighting and magnification for the flakey solder. The solder may look good and NOT BE!!!!!! Trust but, verify suspected joints. LEE

Sony remotes are bad about cold solder joints. Pop the remote apart and check the circuit board. If you have a small soldering iron it should be an easy fix.

I've not had that problem with any of my Sonys so try another remote... don't write Sony off for that!
I suspect a circuit of the remote is causing a problem, or the backside of rubber buttons' coating can wear as to not cause a contact...but sounds like a power related issue...odd
