Problem with Casio E-105

By Jimmy NY - usenet poster

Is anyone else having a difficult time closing applications on your Casio
E-105 (or E-100)? It seems to be random, but the system hangs for 5 to 60
seconds, then closes. This occurs when using both Settings\System\Task
Manager and also with bTask.

Apparently Microsoft doesn't agree with you about CE since they are
rewriting it. It is interesting that it looks like there will be Linux for
CE devices.

I agree that the E-100 is very cool. How would *you* suggest I run it
without using Win CE?

FWIW, Win CE is running much better than I
expected on it - fast and it can do amazing things that were
impossible just a few short months ago.

I never said it couldn't be improved or that I wouldn't like added
functionality. This release added very little besides color
capability, but that's a huge jump. MS has been writing frequent
releases for Win CE. This is a Good Thing for end users. FWIW,
I disagree that MS releasing new versions means that they think
their OS stinks.

Again, I ask the question you omitted in response to your statement:

How would *you* suggest I run the E-100 without using Win CE?
I'd really like to know, as I quite frankly am ignorant about any
other OS that I can use on it and run a wide range of software.

Actually, after reading all the flames about Win CE, I expected
something terrible and that's not been my experience so far. I've
loaded lots of programs, multimedia movie files, a huge map of
the San Francisco Bay Area (South Bay, East Bay, and the Peninsula)
all in one full color map with restaurants, banks, gas stations, etc.
marked - full color, searchable, and scalable down to street level).

I can multitask with no slow down except on the aforementioned
big map. Small maps are speedy. And color is very useful for me.
It makes reading the small screen much more legible. I happen to
like being able to use the full screen for handwriting input and not
having a portion of the screen dedicated to input only. I can hide
the taskbar and (depending on the program) the upper tool bar and have

a *full* screen showing my program.

So, yes, I'm actually happy with Win CE. But again, if you have
something that I can replace it with on my E-100, let me know. I'm
not a WinCE-ist and don't automatically pan anything other than the
OS I happen to be using at the moment.

So the lag could very likely be the result of waiting for WinCE to go
out and gather updated Task & Appointment data to display on the active
desktop before refreshing the screen. Makes sense. I'll have to pop a
bitmap on the background and see if the problem dissapears.

You're correct - it doesn't "hang". However I do not attribute it to the
app that I'm closing - I attribute it to the desktop because it happens with
multiple apps and it happens when I change the Display settings to/from
"Display Wallpaper" to/from the "Display Active Desktop" option.

Since it consistently does this in association with the Display settings for
the desktop but inconsistently with applications I can only surmise that the
application has closed quickly but the desktop isn't refreshing in a timely
fashion. Using the Wallpaper setting, I rarely see the slowdowns.

I'm starting to think the E-10X's weren't reliably ready for shipments as I
have a E-100 and E-105 and both exhibit bad behavior.

Because of the stuff I do in my sig below and do tax PDA's alot and add alot
of software but these are the first units that I have experience so may
weird things.

Make sure you potential buyers have a 30 day return and backup, backup and
backup.

Seems to be a WinCE thing -- I've found that pressing the E100 ESC button
(on side below on/off button) helps -- clears whatever is hanging and allows
other commands.

It's probably not fair to say the "system hangs". At least not in my
experience. When I close an app(using Conduits TaskSwitcher)or the [X]
widget(on apps that have it), the app stops responding, but does not
immediately dissapear/close. During this time, the TaskSwitcher does
not respond either. However, the keyboard and start menu still respond
and I can immediately run or access another app from the start menu.

I noticed this behavior on my E-100 as well. It almost seems as if
it's a screen refresh problem...except that the task manager is tied up
waiting for the app to finish closing.

programs on its own when memory gets short, so that's why most CE
programs don't come with a "quit." I'm guessing that when I try to
shut down a program, it might just be the extra memory needed to
trigger the OS into also trying to shut down a program. Since we
might not be trying to shut down the same program, it takes a while
for things to be sorted out. If I the waiting gets to me, a soft
reset sets things right.

I've noticed this too, but only when I have the tasks and appointments
showing on my desktop - otherwise I notice no speed degredation in closing
apps.

The only time I've ever seen it take anywhere near 60 seconds is when
switching the Display settings around.
