Question about HP LaserJet 3055 All-In-One Printer

HP LJ 3055 Toolbox Not Connected

I access the Laserjet 3055 AIO through a router in a network configuration. I'm able to print fine, however, when I try to get to the Toolbox, error message says "cannot connect to the device" and advises me to check connections. How can connection be working for printing but not toolbox?

    Hi Bob,

    Thanks for venturing a guess given my scanty info. The subject computer is used within a home, not office, network. I downloaded the complete software package myself and believe it's all installed. In fact, when I go to Programs, the Toolbox appears as a component under the LJ 3055.

    I had written HP tech support concurrently and they came back with suggesting a reinstallation as well, which I was hoping to avoid. This will be my fourth reinstallation in as many weeks and the software's finickiness (an excellent description) is getting old. Moreover, after the last install, I had deleted the software I downloaded, a hefty file which I will now have to download again (ugh!).

    In its directions, tech support advised me to run Scrubber utility between uninstalling old stuff and reinstalling the software anew, which I had not done previously owing to ignorance. In fairness to HP, the finickiness is probably partly attributable to poor communications of scenarios and landmines.

    Your idea of configuring as a local printer while using a network port sounds intriguing, though I'm unsure of what it all means and how to make it happen. In any event, I appreciate your interest and helps.

    Using every precaution, I reloaded the software and in the process got rid of the connection issue. As an aside, in reloading the software, I used the CD instead of downloading from HP's web site after reading elsewhere that the downloaded copy was more error prone.

    Had my problem not been solved, I think the troubleshooting steps included in your link would have been helpful, though error message referenced was not identical to mine. Thanks for posting it.

It sounds like a Firewall configuration issue:

Ports 5225-5226 need to be open on the router and on your machine.

Hi SaveWetland!

Without being able to see your machine, I'm going to make an educated guess at your problem. Many times, when a printer is used over a network, only the printer driver itself is actually installed on each user's machine. Utilities, such as the HP Toolbox, may not be installed. If your network administrator allows it, you could download and install the complete printer software package off the HP website, which I'm highly confident would solve your issue. If not, I'd advise you to contact your IT person and have him/her install the complete package for you.

    Hi again!

    Well, that is weird. Do you have a computer hooked up directly to the printer, and if so can you access the toolbox through that computer? If so, I guess that would be a workaround.

    HP printer software is the most finicky on the market, in my humble opinion. I've worked with a lot of printers, and the HP software sometimes seems to have a mind of its own -- and even their high level tech support often gets stumped! When you installed the printer, did you install it as a network printer or did you by chance install it as a local printer, telling the printer to use the network port to print through? If you don't know what I'm talking about here, don't worry about it; it's just an alternate way of connecting a network printer that makes sure that the entire software package was installed.

    If it were me, I'd completely un-install all the HP software for the printer and try again. If you know how to configure the printer whereby it is used across a network but configured as a local printer that uses a network port, I'd try that, as that would assure that all the SW is being installed. If not, I'd just try again on the "normal" network install. If all else fails, you could try HP tech support. I've had good experience with them on the few occasions that I've needed them. Fax issue with HP Laserjet 3055

Hi. The fax-module in lj 3055 needs a 100% analog dial tone. You might get it working on a internet-phone-line, but HP garantees nothing because there are so many internet-phone-providers, and all of them operates with different specs and line-quality. You might try to lower the baud rate, turn off JBIG compession and error-correction. If the problem still remains, you need to replace your phone-line to a 100% analog line. Not any internet or ISDN/adapter-stuff. You should test your fax on any analog line at a friends house, just to make sure the fax i working anway.

Can't print to old applications

The issue your having is with the Operating system compatability. The HP 3055 is compatible with 98, ME, XP, Window 2000 and forward. It won't do windows 3.1 or 95 well even if your computer will, the disconnect comes when the software is sending old print commands to a new style print driver.

Your best hope is to download and install the HP Printdriver for Windows 98 and try it as it's the most tolerant of old gear. Download the PCL 5 as the PCL6 is too new and probably not going to work.

As an alternate try to download each of the printdrivers for the differnt era windows and try them. It's a hard problem that may not have a solution other than upgrading the accounting software.

If it's simply a connection problem, they do make a USB to Parallel addaptor which may help you with the physical connection issue.

HP 3055 prevents boot up in Win2000, causes lockup when connected

Actually I deleted the PCL 6 drivers which had been installed by the original HP driver CD, went to the HP website and downloaded the PCL 5e drivers instead.

I also added a USB switchbox between the PC and Printer, leaving the default setting as disconnected. Now, it boots up fine, without having the HP printer connected.

In use, I wait until just before I need to print a document, switch the USB selector to connected and obtain hardcopies of my documents.

Then, to ensure against screen lockups / freezing, I switch the USB selector back to disconnected.

It's a kludge and not what you should have to do for a $400 laser printer AIO device.

Naturally, I am completely unimpressed with HP software engineers, who have a functionality somewhat below Dilbert and his crew.

Does HP LJ 3055 printer scan over the wireless network?

Scan over wireless network is not supported with this printer. You can try set it up and get scanner to work with usb and then change port from usb to HP standard TCP/IP for the device, but I don't think it will work.
