Question about Western Digital 320GB MyBook External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Western Digital MyBook + Vista SP1=Slow Boot UP

So I have a Western Digital MyBook 320GB HDD attached to my new vista build. Booting up vista normally takes about 15 seconds on my Q6600/2GB Ram build, but with the USB drive connected and powered on it takes over 3 Minutes+! I've looked at the performance log and verified something funky is going on between vista and the usb drive, however the USB drive works fantastic with WinXP and ZenWalk Linux. I've checked it for bad sectors and it comes out clean.

What's the deal? I've got all the current updates for Vista including SP1 and checked in the WD forums but I don't see much there that's of any help. I've googled the issue and found others with the same problem but no solutions.

I've tried turning off USB Legacy support and taking the drive out of the boot order. Doesn't seem like a motherboard issue, Motherboard is an MSI P6N Platinum with the latest bios.

Any other suggestions out there? Any Help? Anyone have the same problem? Am I going crazy?

It's a Nvidia 650I/430i based motherboard. The latest drivers have been loaded. The thing is, the drive works fine once windows loads or if I wait to turn it on once windows is booted. I believe Windows Vista actually provides the drivers for the USB, but I could be wrong. Not at home to check it out right now.

I don't believe it to be a USB driver problem due to the fact that the latest Nvidia Chipset drivers are loaded and all the patches/updates have been performed. Also the drive works fine once Windows Vista is loaded, it only slows the bootup process...doesn't slow anything else.

I have 4 WD Ext drives on a new Vista build. Same problem, 3 minute boot up. Apparently it IS a WD vs Vista issue. The problem is, I, like you have not found a solution. Not a big deal, just annoying waiting for boot up.

1. This could be a "Power related problem".
While you transfer data from with your HDD, make sure your your netbook is connected with an external power supply (Charger/Adapter.).

If it doesnt solve your pproblem, try updating your USB Drivers/ Chipset drivers. (All the Ex-HDD have Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port, may be your MoBo doenst have the relevant drivers to support your HDD.)

If this doesnt solve your problem, try contacting the HDD Manufacturer Support or replace it after recovering your files.

Thanks.

Vista 64 - slow boot with WD MyBook attached

This is caused if there are any system files on your external drives OR if you have set the bios to be able to boot from usb devices

One or the other is where you need to look.

HOW TO CHANGE 320GB SATA HDD TO 500GB SATA

Yes. The case doesn't care what size the drive is. The computer is just asking for the USB driver for the case. Check the WD site for the driver for the model of MyBook that you have. That should cover it.

Slow boot with Vista and MyBook 250GB external USB.

Its the motherboard problem. Just DISABLE in BIOS option in USB tab: SUPPORT USB LEGACCY - or similar to this. This helps on 90percent of motherboards.
