Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

Saying I can't copy 9gb file due to lack of free space, 433bg still showing free

I am trying to use my book to accomplish a windows easy transfer between my old computer and my new computer. I tried downloading the old computer files (9gb file) directly and it told me there were problems with the device but not what the problem was. Then I stored the old computer file on my internal hard disk and tried moving it onto the my book and it told me there was not enough free space. Details on the drive are telling me I have 433gb free which seems about right. What is going wrong?

That might be due to the drive being formatted as Fat32 which has a file size limitation of 4 Gig..open up my computer, and look at the properties of that drive..right click..and that might help you

I want to back up my hard drive to an external hard drive(Western my book 320G)I do not wish to purchase their auto back-up program. Can this be accomplished?

Yes it can,. Your external HDD will show up in "my Computer" as another drive. You can transfer files simply using copy and paste. (or edit -> copy files to folder) which I advise. Bear in mind that hidden, and read only files will not be copied. These files include the mailboxes in Outlook Express. So be careful. I advise making copies of all files of this kind, first.

Cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.

When I plug in my 320GB My Passport Western

It seems your HDs left over portion which is not showing is not formatted for the particular OS in which you are trying to copy. It is advised to backup your HD contents and format the HD with the OS from which you want to take data in the same FAT system which that OS is using.

No space error

This is due to the file transfer limitations bound by the file format FAT32 (no files larger than 4GB and no folders that contain more than 1000 files). Try formatting the drive to NTFS.

221 GB Free on MyBook - Error states not enough space for backup

It may be due to the file system.  If formated as FAT32 files larger than 4gb may not transfer.  Try reformatting as NTFS to fix the problem.

Free space on my external hdd

Check the file system on your My Book. FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB. I ran into the same problem when I tried to copy over a 4.5GB file from my laptop with NTFS on it. The file would not copy.
