I am having the same problem as grizzly32, with replacing my black ink cartridge but my error code is U162.

I replaced the empty tank with a full one and, I have tried to manually reset the ink level function by pressing Stop/Reset for a full 6 seconds.

The ink cartridge light is flashing every second.

I have wiped the contacts off with alcohol.  Shut off the machine and turned it back on a few times and unplugged the machine too.  Nothing helps.  The message reads that the black ink vol unknown and then reads Error U162, check ink.

The Scan cover is closed completely and locked in place. And the ink cartridge is firmly locked in place as well.

We purchased this printer a couple of months ago at Costco.

    Can you help?

Hello,

Can you tell me, have you replaced the empty tank with a full one? And, have you manually reset the ink level function by pressing Stop/Reset for a full 6 seconds (one second longer than described in your manual?)

If you have, and you still see the ink cartridge light flashing, does it flash every second or every three seconds?

The contacts for the ink cartridge are easy to contaminate by accident. Sometimes wiping the contacts off with alcohol will clean them enough for the ink level to be recognized.

Now, and yes, this is a common problem. Press and Hold the Stop/Reset button for 6 full seconds again after cleaning the contacts and then release it? Use the one Mississippi method of counting.

The Scan cover must be closed completely and locked in place. And the ink cartridge must be firmly locked in place as well.

Please advise me of your results. There may be a more complex problem involved and it is important to have the necessary data in order to get you back to working again. Okay?

How long has it been since you purchased this printer?

Regards,
Worldvet

    @Wheaties4567

Have you reinstalled the Printer Software?

It will be helpful for you to get a new trouble ticket as the one you piggy baced on is now closed.

You will see under my board name in blue text a link to my profile page. Navigate there and use the Ask Button to respond to me about whether you installed the printer software or not. This will start a new trouble ticket and help us follow you in the course of getting your problem solved.

Thanks, it will help me take you to the next step. I'll be able to post a link to the latest software for your printer. Getting your old software off the PC and reinstalled is not quite straight forward. But, it can be done, so keep the faith and this will be resolved too, if you are willing to work with me over the weekend until it is resolved. Sorry, I can't point you to a "magic button"; it would be so nice if magic buttons did exist.

    Regards,
    Worldvet

After you change the cartbridge put the red button (with a triangle in a circle) your canon will "reboot" and it will be ok. A had the same error U163 and it's working perfectly now.

After you changed the cartbridge. Push the red button in the right (with a triangle in a circle) and let it pushed until your canon "reboot". I had the U163 error, tried this and now it's ok.

Easy peazy...hold the stop reset for about 5-10 seconds and a message will pop up...."ink level unknown" you can now print.

On some models its the copy button you hold, either black or colour depending on what cartridge the printer says is empty.

Ok, the problem might lay in the ink cartridge itself and not the MX310. If you have brought a cheap version of Canons cartridge then that might be to blame because the MX310 might not like the cheap ones. Canons Cartridge must seem expensive but they might work better then the cheap ones.

Yes , the swines who made my Canon MX330 have in their wisdom(sarcasm intended) decided if you dont have ink you shouldnt be allowed to scan. How dumb ids that?Try pressing the Black Key(diamond with a one in it as well as the stop key at the same time. Wont be buying Canon again. Cartridges too expensive.

I have canon pixma 310 its say chech ink u163 what thats mean

Good Day Sandip920!

Error U163 means, the printer detected that your black ink cartridge has been refilled with new ink.
It is very easy to clear this error and keep your printer printing.

How?
1. Turn on your printer.
2. When error U163 appears, press and hold the STOP/RESET buton on the printer. Hold it down until the printer self restart and initialize.
3. if after U163 is cleared off and appear another error, U162, press and hold again the STOP/RESET button and wait till printer self restart and initialize again.

Hope this helps!

Tip

Error Code U163

[Although specifically written for an MX310, this should work for all MX and MP series Canon printers.]

If this Tip does not work for you, please notify me by accessing my profile page at here and using the Ask button to write me a note.
I can then help you with your specific problem.

Error Code U163 (Ink Cartridge Empty or Low)

First of all, Yes, this is a common problem.

When you open your printer up, by lifting the Scan Cover, you will see lights blinking for the cartridge that is low or is empty.

1.) A lamp blinking once every three seconds means your cartridge is low.
2.) A lamp blinking once every second means your cartridge is empty.

Using your printer with an empty ink cartridge is capable of harming your printer, according to Canon Engineers.

Until such time as you can replace the cartridge you can use the method described below to temporarily turn off the error message.

Press and Hold the Stop/Reset button for 6 full seconds and then release it? Use the one Mississippi method of counting.

The Scan cover must be closed completely and locked in place. And the ink cartridge must be firmly locked in place as well.

Please advise me of your results. There may be a more complex problem involved and it is important to have the necessary data in order to get you back to working again.

Worldvet

NOTE: If this doesn't resolve your Canon problem and you want to try another Tip that may work, you can try this Tip written by Darklord. At least give it a read, it has been known to reset some Canon printers.

Check ink u163

This is Canon's explanation of what this error refers to:

Ink has run out.

Replace the ink cartridge and close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover).

If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing, press the Stop/Reset button for at least 5 seconds with the ink cartridge installed. Then printing can continue under the ink out condition.

The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled.

Replace the empty ink cartridge immediately after the printing. The resulting print quality is not satisfactory, if printing is continued under the ink out condition.

error u163 tells you it thinks its out of ink .. open the lid .. the problem cart will blink every 3 seconds if the cart is low and every second if its empty .. you can reset the error by holding down the "stop/reset" button for about 10 seconds .. but its not good to run the printer if a cart is empty.
