Question about Freezers

Kenmore 16.7 cu upright frost free freezer

I have the freezer on the lowest setting but things are rock hard and a thin layer of frozen water in on the bottom of the freezer. I thawed the freezer this past summer so the drain hole was open again. Yesterday I noticed that it is froze up again. I have read your advice on other postings with problems like mine but you only say what is going on, which I know the drain hole is froze up probably because the freezer is too cold. One posting stated that the temp control board or thermistor is not reading the temp. How hard is that to replace? My husband is pretty good with repairs but we don't know where to start or if we should just call a repair man. Thank you for your help with this problem. Of course the 5 year warranty has just run out for the sealed system(refrigerant, evaporator and condenser) but not sure it would fall under those repairs.

The freezer is a kenmore model # 25323725100 upright frost free bought in 2003. I have it on the lowest setting and the temp is zero and somtimes below. I don't think the freezer is running all the time because I have gone out to the garage and it is not running.

I read one remedy to keep the drain hole open was to wrap a copper wire around the heater and put it down into the drain to keep it from freezing up.

It seems like the freezer has always been super cold from the start. Food is so rock hard that it takes a couple of days to thaw out.

I will print out your advice and put it on my husband's honey do list. :-) It sounds like that is exactly our problem. Thank you so much. Love the picture of the dog!

Since everything seems to work properly it may just be your temperature sensor, etc. has always been out of calibration. The t-stats are only about $23 bucks and very simple to replace. Pull the temp knob off and there you'll see the screws. I'd start by replacing this first then seeing if the temps are more controllable. Usually a 3-5 setting is good so being way low on the dial seems unusual. The drain hole copper I use is 1/4" copper tubing that I cut to about 6" long, hammer a few inches flat then use pliers to round a hook shape into the flat end. Test hang it on the heating element with the other end of the copper about 1" into the drain hole (cut as needed). That ensures the water will drain and not refreeze before if flows out. Also check that the hole drains fast, use hot tap water and pour a 1/2 cup in real fast to make sure you see it flow out fast. If it's slow the drain tube may be clogged (I've found green peas are perfect to plug a hole). or are good part sources. Let me know how it goes. for part to swap out.

What temperature should the freezer be set at?

Deep freezers are typically supposed to be at 0 Degrees (F) or slightly below, which allows food to be kept frozen for long periods of time.

Freezer runs but won't keep most foods frozen even on coldest setting

Check condenser clean and fan working. Check it's not frozen solid because you've been running it full pelt; if it is, fully defrost it then set it at a mid range setting.

Admiral upright freezer dripping water inside on top

I can help. Once we notice anything different from before we start becoming more aware of small variations. Regarding things on the top shelf warmer than on the bottom, this is always true because, "warm air rises and cold air falls". If you want the top shelf colder turn the thermostat to the next colder setting, always a good idea in the Summer season anyway.

Even though your gasket looks good, a ten year old gasket is not as pliable as a new one resulting in the moisture problem you describe. I would begin by applying a thin coating of vaseline to the gasket once a week for a month. This little trick of the trade will often work. If it doesn't improve the situation do replace the gasket.

You can try 2 things. Unplug it for about 2-3 minutes and then replug it. It should reset itself. You can silence the alarm or muffle it. Silencing it should be hard. Disconnect it from its source. You may want to find out why it is alarming constantly. Have you called Sears and asked them?

Sears Coldspot 17 frostless freezer not defrosting

One reason for the fan running is that it is trying to distribute the air in the compartment. Look at the very rear of the freezer on the bottom and see if the little vents, which allow water to disperse, are not filled with frozen ice. If so, turn off the fridge (unplug it) and use a hair dryer to melt that ice until it is all gone. That will probably fill the condensation pan under the unit and you'll need to empty it.
