Update your skype to the latest version, direct x (Windows update) andvideo card drivers from your manufacturer (go to manufactureres site;they'll lead you through it)

start with your webcam off, Go toTools, options, video settings. Click on Enable Skype video and Startmy video when Skype turns on. Then select "default video device".

scan your computer and see if there's any virus on it

or check for trojan or malwares, or spyware

see if your computer and os can satisfy the requirements of skype:

  • System requirements
  • PC running Windows 2000, XP or Vista. (Windows 2000 users require DirectX 9.0 for video calls).
  • Internet connection – broadband is best (GPRS is not supported for voice calls).
  • Speakers and microphone – built-in or separate.
  • For voice and video calls we recommend a computer with at least a 1GHz processor, 256 MB RAM and of course a webcam.
  • ForHigh Quality Video calls you will need a highquality video webcam andsoftware, a dual-core processor computer and afast broadbandconnection (384 kbps).

When calling with video It keeps disconnecting about every five mins. It takes many redials to reconnect..I have a Microsoft LifeCam Cinema Webcam, with current download and skype version

This sounds like you have a slow internet connection. It should have nothing to do with the camera. Find out if your service provider is having network problems.

Each call I make within 3-5 mins a message from skype says Skype has encountered a problem & needs to close" and then it closes my line

Hey there! I have the same problems, sometimes! Well, what you should do is:
If you have a Mac:
  1. Click on 'Finder'
  2. Click on 'Applications' on the left
  3. Find the Skype Icon
  4. Drag it to the trash
  5. Empty trash can
  6. Then, go to and re-install the version or new version (if available)
If you have a PC:
  1. Click on Start
  2. Go to Control Panel
  3. Click on 'Add/Remove Program
  4. Remove Skype
  5. Then, go to and re-install the version or new version (if available)
I hope I helped you & that this was helpful at most! Let me know & Don't forget to rate! :)

Can't add any contacts -- small boxes with red x's (like when Adobe reader won't open) appear in all fields. I'm up to date on Adobe, so can't figure out how to add names -- let alone try calling!

There are 4 ways to import contacts into skype, which are all more or less a royal pain.

(1) Skype's built-in "import contacts" utility (Tools-->Import Contacts...). You will go through a wizard that checks Outlook, Hotmail, and Yahoo (NOT gmail) address books.

Please not that there is a HUGE catch to this utility. After checking to see if any of your contacts are already using skype (under the exact same name), it lists all your contacts and the following lunatic request:

"Share Skype with your friends! Would you like to invite the rest of your friends to start using Skype? Select the friends you would like to invite and click "Finish" to complete invitation."

In other words, you have to spam everyone you know in order to transfer their details into skype. After such a stunt, you will be lucky if they haven't put you on their block lists. Forget about business contacts. Calling an "invitation" feature "Import Contacts" is extremely misleading to say the least. I almost did not continue with skype after realizing this tactic.

(2) The second option is the "Restore Contacts" utility (Skype--Tools-->Advanced-->Restore Contacts from file...). It opens a little file browser where you can locate a VCF file on your computer, which you have previously exported from another address book.

You will have to alter the VCF file before using "Restore Contacts." I was tipped off to this by jhscann's helpful post:

Open Notepad, and open the exported VCF file. You will see a long file of text with paragraphs beginning "BEGIN VCARD" and ending "END VCARD." Inside, you will see the names, phone numbers, etc.

Yahoo address book, for instance, uses slightly different tags than Skype. In order to replace the tags, you can open a Skype VCF file (first, add a couple of contacts to Skype, then go to Tools-->Advanced-->Back up contacts to File, then open the VCF file in Notepad. You can compare the two formats.

In my case, I ended up pasting the Yahoo VCF text into Excel, inserted a column with a series of numbers 1, 2, 3 until the end (several thousand rows), then sorted alphabetically, so I could delete everything except the name and phone number. I replaced "Version 2" with "Version 3.0," and the Yahoo Name and number tags with the Skype ones. I substituted the REV tags. I'm not sure how much I needed to change, but I did find that Skype would not accept phone numbers unless they were written in the form (###)#######, without spaces or hyphens. This last alteration I did by hand, having decided that I would not dignify this whole mind-game with an macro or basic program, as suggested in this post: Finally I re-sorted by the number column and cut-and-pasted the text column back into Notepad, saved as, went to Skype Tools-->Advanced-->restore from File, and voila, all my contacts popped up.

(3) I was surprised to find a utility offered on Skype's own website which does the whole conversion for you: This purports to bypass the "invitations" and import a list of contacts, which you have exported from other address books including Gmail. It says, "free trial" and imports 10 contacts, after which you are informed that you must pay money. This fact, and the price of the full version, is not stated on the download page, even under "details." Needless to say, most people who use Skype have no intention of paying money for such a simple feature which every other VOIP service includes by default. Whatever the utility costs, it would probably have been worth less than the time I spent, had I not already spent an hour wandering around the internet in bewilderment. By this point, out of principle, I was not going to fork over a cent.

Another "free" utility, Yahoo Address Book to Skype Importer, by "," can be found on "freeware" websites, and it too requires that you pay, after 5 imports.

(4) A fourth option, perhaps the best, is to simply Add Contacts in the Skype Contacts tab, one by one. If you have hundreds of contacts, this would be an exercise in masochism.

No matter what method you use, you will have built up a huge grudge against the Skype corporation.

Ultimately, you might come to this forum to share your trials and tribulations, attracted by the apparent simplicity and transparency of the Community--only to find more hidden red tape. You must post 5 replies to different posts (in my case, "meaningless post #1...etc) in order to open a new topic.

I have a desktop and a laptop - both with skype installed. I have now given the laptop to my mother but we are unable to make skype realise that there are 2 skype accounts. We have changed the profile etc,...

Bring up Skype. Sign Out of Skype. On the Sign In screen input your mothers Skype name and password. Check Start Skype when the PC laptop starts and sign in boxes. After first successful sign in with your mothers skype name all will be well. You will have to wait till Skype gets their site fixed. says Skype is now gradually returning to normal - we expect it may take several hours for everyone to be able to sign in again, howeverabout 5 hours ago via CoTweet
