Question about HP Compaq Presario V2000 Notebook

My machine is running slow and

I have only used up a little over half the hard disk space. I purged the machine of all unncecessary software and it is still slow. What route should I take? Go to Geeksquad and upgrade the memory or buy a new machine? Thanks! PS: I have just basic nuts and bolts software on this laptop. MS Office (2003), McAffee, Itunes, Sony Digital Handycam software... My friend told me that the new versions of software eat up much more Ram than an older computer can handle and that it is best to just buy a new machine. Is he right?

Hey, I recomend you to look at the programs that startup along with windows in Msconfig.
The procedure about how to check the programs that start with windows using Msconfig utility and disabling them is listed in the link given below :
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html

Try disabling unwanted programs in the Startup tab in the Msconfig window which should improve the performance.
Most of the programs that are preinstalled in the Notebook will be having some services running in the background which can also be disabled from the Services tab.
Check the box "Hide all non-microsoft services" which will show the services that doesnot belong to the Operating System and disable the ones  you donot require.
Do find additional instructions to improve the performance of your machine from the links below :
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c00034290

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308417

Hope this helps.....

Did you really purge everything? Temporary files, log files, etc?
If not, the first thing to do is a disk cleanup. Get rid of everything (though compressing old files might take a very long time - sometimes it is not worth the trouble). Any temporary file will make windows explorer and internet explorer slower. Clean these regularly. Also, set your pagefile to at least 1,5 times the size of your RAM. And defrag your disk every once in a while.
Also, try to get "Free Registry Defrag" from the web and run it. It helps.
Oh, and a dusty machine is a slow machine. Vacuum its bowels.

A slow laptop

Many things can slow a laptop down. First, how old is this machine? Older machines must work harder to run today's websites and applications. If the machine is not that old, check to see how much RAM the machine has. Many laptops only have 2GB or less. This makes them run slower with the newer software and websites. Consider upgrading to at least 4GB if the machine is capable. Next, look at the hard drive. How much free space does it have? If there is less than 10GB free, you could be having space issues causing slowdowns. The OS and applications use free hard drive space during operation, but if the space is not available, this can slow down or freeze applications. Next, check the Recycle Bin. If there are a lot of files in it, it takes up space that can be used for the OS and programs. Clear it out, or better yet, empty it. Next, check the ventilation holes and fan assemblies for the unit. if the vents are clogged and/or the fan is not working, this will cause the CPU to run hot. This will slow down processing and possibly cause freezing and eventually, failure. Next, look at your browser. How many add-on toolbars does it have? Many programs add stuff to the browser without your even being aware. Each of these takes a little speed of the browser at work. Consider removing any toolbars that you aren't using or don't want. You can go to Remove Programs under Control Panel and see these there for removal. Last possibility is Virus or Malware. Even the best antivirus software won't find everything. You can download a free version of Malwarebytes at malwarebytes.com. This will find almost anything that is not desired. Any one of theses issue, and often, a combinations of them, work to slow down laptops to a crawl.

This laptop is very slow

Slowness in the laptop can be due to many reasons. You may upgrade your processor( to i5 or i7), but that will be too costly. Try increasing the RAM of your laptop. Also don't overflow your hard drive. Decrease in free space on your hard drive will ultimately slow down your laptop.

FIXING A SLOW COMPUTER

A slow computer could be caused by a number of things -
1. Insufficient RAM (memory) - if your computer has less than 512Mb of RAM then increase it to at least 1Gb of RAM.
2. Registry problems - clean and repair the registry, it will contain unused registry keys. Use programs such as Registry Mechanic, Microsoft RegClean etc.
3. Uninstall/remove unused programs, this will also free up hard disk space.
4. Not enough hard disk space - swap file space may need to be increased if Windows hasn't been configured to manage it.
5. Install latest Windows updates.
6. Update virus definition files and scan computer for viruses, Trojans, malware etc.
7. Clear the Internet cache for faster browsing.
8. Hard disk maintenance is required at least once a month to keep it functioning efficiently.
Run the following programs -
Disk Cleanup - removes temporary files that are no longer used and to recovers hard disk space.
Disk Defragmenter to make fragmented files into contiguous files and therefore the hard disk access is faster.
