Canon powershot sd500 e18 error message - Cameras

My e18 problem. I know the lens is stuck! I have the camera in my hand! I would like to know how to unstick it or to open the camera to repair it. Canon says they don't have a service manual. I'm sure there is advice for me out there.

    Thanks!

turn the camera on and off while trying to gently turn the lens and pop
it back into place. It didn't work when the camera was OFF. again
it ON, but after five seconds, the error code would come on and shut
the camera down. So Finally, u turned the camera ON and within those
first five seconds, again u turned the lens in all 3 sections until u
heard it "SNAP" Into place. u turned the camera off and the lens
retracted. Then u Turned it on and the Camera worked like a charm
    after that!

Try first to remove the batteriies, see if this clear the error.

If not , it means that the lens mechanism is stuck, has dirt or dust on the inside , or had received a shock and some part is deformed or moved.

If the lens does not extend try slapping gently the back of the camera while you turn the camera on, or help the lens out with your fingernail.

If you cannot unlock the lens in this simple way, then the camera must be taken apart at a repair shop.

Naturally, if camera is under guaranty, dont open it, and, as usual, you take responsability for the repair.

E18 came up on the LCD screen. The camera will not operate.

E:18 is a standard "lens error" message for Canon cameras. If the lens is stuck at an angle, then sometimes you can SNAP it back towards center and make it work again. If it's not at an angle then you will need to replace the lens assembly. A good refurbished lens install is about $75, so you have to weigh that against buying a new camera for $200 or sending the camera to Canon to fix for $125.

Hope this helps.

Lens will not open/extend. Lens error message, but no E18

Due to the tight tolerances inside the lense mechanism - small bits of sand or lint may become trapped in the mechanics.

It is advised to take the camera to a camera repair shop and have it disassembled and cleaned.

There are many small parts and intricacies that will render it totally useless if not done properly.
