Depending on the model of your dryer it's very easy. If you have a 27" model that opens from the front panel, it's right there on the exhaust duct near the front.

Sometimes kenmore dryer heats up and sometimes it doesn't . What could be the cause?

You may have a bad timer assembly. There could be a bad thermister that normally cuts the electricity to the heating element when the dryer reaches the correct termperature, or you could have a cracked heating element, which are usually fairly easy to replace and available on Ebay for a reasonable price for most dryers.

How to replace the thermister

as there are several thermistors are u sure u are replacing the right one? if so u just cut the wires leaving enough length to connect the new ones and twist tie with but connectors. its easy job when checked with multimeter after setting thermistor in cold ice cup for about 5 minutes the olm reading should be around 16,300 olms give or take 5 percent if its not its bad , I say that bcuz just checking to see if it has continuity could give u a false reading as to if its working properly

How to test a dryer thermister

Hi mdecker1
The way to test a thermister is to remove the wires (tape them together for later use) from it and test the leads coming from the thermistor with an Volt/Ohm meter...it should read continuity across the two leads.
But sometimes they will be bad but show good with the volt/ohm meter, so I also recommend the action below.
The easy way to see if the thermistor is bad is to tape the two wires ends together (see above) and turn the machine on...it it comes on and heats...replace the thermistor.
Please take time to rate me thumbs up

Its probably your door switch. As for taking your dryer apart well it's one of those, I can show you better than I can tell, kinda things. Search "deconstructing a dryer" and "appliance assistant" for the video.O7OUT

Whirlpool gew9868kq2 runs, all program panel lights work no heat under any setting

you may need the element which is #14 in the attached breakdown, part #3387747. OR, it could be a thermostat(s) #47 & 48 come in a thermal cut off kit, part #3977394 and #42 is an internal bias thermostat and the part # is 3976615. hope this helps.

My GEW9200LW0 electric dryer will stop after a few minutes and flash E1 code. Is it most likely a faulty thermistor? How do I know the correct part # to order?

HI, the thermistor is the culprit in this situation. the actual location of the affected part is inside the unit, on the blower housing(mounted on the backside). The part number is (3976615)

E-1:=(Failed Thermistor)

SIDE NOTE:-The manufacturer has replaced part number 3976615 with this item, part number 8577274. 8577274 may differ in appearance, but is a functional equivalent to prior parts including 3976615.

Derf, E1 means an open thermistor. If this is a front loader, remove the lower panel by removing the 3 screws on the bottom panel. The thermistor will be sitting right behind the blower housing next to a white thermal fuse. The thermistor is the black one. If this is a standard model the lower panel should open by sliding a puddy knife on the two clips and pulling foward. The thermistor is in the same place as a front loader. Your part number should be 3976615. An easy job. Don't forget to kill the power to the unit when repairing...Good luck.
