Loud gear noise in spin cycle.

During spin cycle, there is a loud gear or bearing noise. Looked in the back and there is a rusty stain where a watery substance is leaking out the rear bearing.

The washer is approx 4 years old

Thank You MNTECH !!! I took apart the tub assembly and you were correct, the rear seal caused the water to damage the bearings. The outer rear tub assemble and a new spider fixed the problem. It was a big job, but I was able to do the work myself and save a bunch.

    Thanks again,

    Marcel

That's bad. That means the rear seal has leaked into the rear bearing. The fix would be to replace the back outer tub assembly 3045ER0008N and probably the spider 4434ER0002A for the WM2277HW. They do list separate seals and bearings, but they are hydraulically pressed into the outer tub, so realistically that is not an option. Figure at least 2 hours labor. It's a big job, and not very cheap. Please don't bother rating this, as anything other than a FixYa would drop my rating, and I don't think you want to shoot the messenger.

How old is your washer.

Unfortunately the first techs post is right on target.
Here is an article I just read that may help you make a decision.

Repair or replace
?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to advise you.
Please do not forget to leave a rating.!
Thank You, Huuum

Loud Bearing Noise During Spin Cycle- MAH4000AWW

I don't know these front loaders so well but, here's a couple of things to look for.
1) If belt driven, look for the spring loaded tensioner. Once tension is released, check the pully & see if it has excessive play.
2) Check the gasket on front panel & see if drum has rubbed thru it in order to make metal to metal contact.
3) There is alot of pressure on that rear bearing...make sure it's not egg shaped or scored on the inside.

If all else fails, shotgun it (in other words, replace those moving parts you suspect:)

Makes very loud noise when in spin cycle

Thanks for choosing FixYa Steve and welcome to the site. Anytime you have loud noises during the spinning cycle, it can almost always be related back to your motor drive. It controls the spinning, agitation also. It is either the drive motor or the spin bearing more then likely. None the less, it will need to be looked at to determine the cause. You will probably find your problem at these two points Steve. They are common.

When in spin cycle machine makes a very loud whining noise

Most common cause for your whining noise is because the seals have failed/worn and allowed water into the bearings..Rusty ball bearings are not smooth...Hence the noise.....Probably needs bearing/seal and probably shaft replacement....Big job..Get quotes....Good luck...Nomess

Yes, bearing, most definitely. It is a cheap part but difficult to replace.
