When the external AC power supply is unplugged from a notebook, the LCD display will dim to conserve on battery power. During times of heavy battery power operation; such as during the startup or boot process, the display may be very dim or barely readable. If the display remains dim when the notebook is operating on the Windows desktop, follow the steps below to resolve problems with display brightness Restart the notebook with AC power Follow the steps below to determine if the dim display is due to a hardware failure:

  1. Connect the AC adapter to the notebook and a working electrical outlet.
  2. Power down the notebook PC by pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds.
  3. Press the power button again to start the computer.
If the display is still dim after restarting with the AC adapter connected, try changing the LCD brightness. Adjust the LCD brightness using the function keys From the Windows desktop, hold the fn key and press the f7 key backlight only stays on for - c00776226.jpg to increase or the f8 key c00776225.jpg to decrease the brightness of the display. If using the function keys does not resolve the problem and you have a Lid Actuator on your particular model, check the movement of the Lid Actuator switch to determine that it moves freely and is not stuck. NOTE: The key numbers ( f7 or f8 ) may vary depending on the notebook PC; however, the images on the keys should be familiar. Check the movement of the Lid Actuator switch The Lid Actuator switch is available on some models. It is a small button or switch located above the keyboard near the hinge for the LCD. Pressing this switch when the computer is on may turn the notebook display off, or it may cause the notebook to enter a different power state. Press the switch two to three times while observing the display. If the display does not return to normal brightness when the switch is released, the switch may be sticking and need to be repaired. Contact HP service and support for further assistance. If the display turns off when the switch is pressed, the power management function may be set to hibernate or turn off when the lid is closed. Install updated BIOS and drivers To resolve certain hardware and software issues, use HP Health Check to automatically search the HP web site for an updated BIOS as well as any updated software and drivers. To launch HP Health Check, follow the steps below.
  1. Click Start , type health into the search field, and then select HP Health Check from the list. HP Health Check displays a list of available BIOS, software, and driver updates for your particular model.
  2. Click the description link for any BIOS, software, or driver updates, and then follow the on-screen instructions. You can only install one update at a time.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 above for all updates that you want to install.
You have now installed the available BIOS, software, and driver updates for your particular computer model. Contact HP service and support If the display remains dim after doing the troubleshooting steps listed in this document, contact HP service and support for further assistance.

LCD monitor back light won't stay on

Hello,

Running any device 33% higher voltage for any length of time will likely harm it. However, knowing that that worked you have two possibilities.

1. The 12V AC adapter is dying and simply needs replacement.

2. The FLR inverter(backlight) is dying and giving it some extra juice forced a little more life out of it.

Do your best to track down a propper adapter(with 5%, 11.4V-12.6V), if this works that should be your solution, if not then the FLV is dying and you may need a pro to replace it. Generally about $100 at a shop.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Sounds a lot like the backlight for it is just about dead. Nothing you've done can cause this to happen, and it certainly isn't a setting on the monitor or PC.

The backlight can be bought as a part, and replaced by a technician (or yourself if you have a rough idea what you're doing). By the time you find one, buy it, ship it, fit it... it might not be worth your time for the cost of a new 21" widescreen monitor.

You'd probably recoup some loss by selling it as faulty for parts too.

Still, be 100% sure before you do it... borrow a monitor and plug it in. I bet the borrowed monitor won't behave the same way. =-]

Frozen during boot-up, keyboard still works

Sounds like the PC is running into a hardware failure and the Compaq splash screen is probably hiding some additional information. It?s been a long time since I've owned a Compaq, however, what you need to do first is eliminate the Compaq screen to show us whatever boot details it may be hiding. I seem to recall on my old Compaq (and most Dells) I had to disable the Compaq screen in the BIOS settings. Hitting the F10 key as soon as the Compaq screen appears I believe will get you into the BIOS program, however, be warned if you change anything in there by accident you will be causing yourself a world of trouble. After you get into there you want to look for the Boot selection of the menu. In there somewhere will be a setting referring to something similar to ?reveal boot details? or hide splash or Compaq screen?. If it isn?t obvious let me know, I?ll have access to an older Compaq with a similar BIOS and can give you more details. If you are able to disable the splash screen reboot the PC and watch for errors. Based on the age of the machine and past history I suspect you?ll find a boot disk or read error.
