Question about Televison & Video

Lightening blew out my 35" TV which is approx 11 years old. I replaced the fuse in the set and the power light clicks on when the set in plugged in. The on/off button does not work, it has to be unplugged to turn off. However, I get "cable 2" message on the picture tube which remains totally blank, no lines, no ant fight, no nothing. This makes me believe the tube is no longer good. Any suggestions? Thank you

    Dear Dan,

Thank you so very much for your advice. Both my uncle and brother who are experienced with electronics (not tv's though) gave me the same advice but I was still apprehensive about letting my big tv go. Now I feel much better knowing that more problems would probably occur in the future. Now

I just need to locate a safe disposal site. Thank you again. This site is awesome!!!!!

The tube is probably fine, but the internal electronics are messed up. With a set that old, and the fact that it took a lightning hit, I wouldn't suggest spending anything on it. Take whatever insurance money you get and put it toward a new set. Most shops will tell you that lightning hits are not good investments as there are often hidden problems that appear over time.

Hello, I have been having power problems with my Samsung FPT5084 50" plasma for the past year. I know what the problem is,m just don't know how to fix it. My TV keeps blowing fuses. I bought 10 12A 250V...

I would have maintenance from your building come out or the electric company and put a monitor on the 110v line into your apartment to make sure the ground strap is not coming loose in which your voltage will rise in excess of 150 volts.
As far as I see, your AC line fuse is only a 6 amp. Why are you using a 12 amp? If you have a circuit board ID number of the fuse your replacing, that would be helpful. I know of no Plasma set that uses a 12 amp fuse, not even old heavy current draw sets of yester year. You can e-mail me at jmk2938@gmail.com

Toshiba 57H81 Flashing Red Power Light, Blown Fused F850+F852

Solved by resoldering some solder joints!!!!!!!
********
Toshiba Model 57H81 Rear Projection TV - Purchased 11-09-2001

Problem: Toshiba 57H81 Flashing Red Power Light, No Picture/Sound, Blown Fuses F850 + F852

Symptoms January, 2009:

  • Upon turning on set I got flashing red power light and nothing else.
  • Removing plug for one minute and plugging in results in:
    • Audible click, steady red power light for 2 seconds then slow flashing red light
    • Pushing power button results in steady red for about 2 seconds then slow flashing red light, no other set activity
  • Removing power cord for several hours and plugging back in made no change
    • Audible click, steady red for about 2 seconds then slow flashing red light
  • Possible related note: Over past several months occasionally the entire screen would flicker momentarily and at other times be problem free for weeks.
  • Fuses F850 and F852 found blown

Repairs Made:
  • PD0074 DEF/CON Power Board
    • There are two main power supply capacitors in this set. They are C-809 and C-810. One their negative lead on the printed circuit board re-soldered leads and nearby contacts. I’m told that because the factory left out a printed circuit board eyelet, the connection will come loose over time. When I called Toshiba customer service they said there was a known solder joint problem causing blinking red light.
    • Replaced blown fuses F850 and F852.
      • I actually installed a fuse panel on the inside of the cabinet and routed the fuse connections here instead of ordering the special fuses and replacing them on the circuit board.
      • Had to use a 5 Amp SLO-BLOW for F850. Fast blow does not survive power up. Get the red blinking light.
      • Used a fast blow 2 Amp for F852.
  • PD0073 SIGNAL Board
    • Re-soldered Q751 + Q752 STK392-110 Convergence Amps
    • Re-soldered adjacent pads that looks suspicious

Total Cost to Repair about $10
  • Twelve hours of my time over three days to research issue, disassemble set, make repairs, add fuse panel.
  • Already owned Service Manual and Circuit diagrams from a different 2004 repair.
  • Less than ten dollars at Radio Shack for fuses and fuse panel. Already had wires, etc.
  • Some solder. Already owned de-soldering tools, etc.
  • Visited both local authorized Toshiba factory service repair facilities. One said repair would have to include replacing Q751 + Q752 STK392-110 Convergence Amps with ST392-180, and realigning set for a total of $500+ and it would be more if they had to order a power board. NO THANK YOU! Other shop said $65 for site visit and $30 to make an estimate that could be applied to repair.

power surges generally damage diodes and capacitors causing the fuse to blow, any reputable tv shop can repair for a fraction of replacing this set.

Samsung HCL4715W will not power on

At five years old, I doubt it will be worth replacing the power supply , a picture tube or two and possible the signal board. Cut your loses and get a new set.

If there is no power indicator, you could have gotten lucky and only the main fuse insiude the set blew. You can unplug the TV set, take off the back of the TV. Then where the line cord comes out of the TV set and plugs into the wall, look where the line cord enters the set and look for a glass type cylinder fuse. If it is black, most likely there is a short inside the TV set. If it is not black, try replacing the fuse with ONLY the type that is stamped on the side of the fuse. If the set still does not work, or if the fuse blows again, you will need to have the set serviced by a pro. Good Luck
