Try pressing F8 on startup, and chose to start in safe mode, if you can start the computerin safe mode, perform a system restore to an earlier date.

If the computer does not even start in safe mode, then you will need to reinstall the system, either from recovery CD, or from a generiuc windows Setup disk.

Lap top shows a screen saying "Computer is locked" just clicking on the box, makes it go to the next screen. just a hasle doing this every time.

In order to remove the lock screen after resuming from screen saver, sleep, standby, and hibernate, please follow these steps.

Windows Vista/7
1. Right click on an empty space on the desktop and select "Personalize"

2. On the far right of the Personalization window is the option for Screen Saver. Click "Screen Saver".

3. Unselect "On resume, display logon screen".

4. Click "Change Power Settings".

5. Click "Require a password on wakeup" on the left hand pane.

6. Select "Don't require a password" and select Save changes.

Windows XP
1. Right click on an empty space on the desktop and select "Properties"

2. Select the Screen Saver tab.

3. Unselect "On resume, display Welcome screen" or "On resume, password protect".

4. Select "Power".

5. Select the "Advanced" tab.

6. Uncheck "Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby". Click Apply, then OK, and then OK again.

Good luck, please post back if you have any difficulties, and thanks for using FixYa.

Monitor displays breifly then goes to blank screen

If tried the monitor on two other computers with the same result -- definitly your monitor is faulty. Take it to the repair shop. To make double sure, run your computer with another monitor. If everything is fine now; you can blame the monitor.

Emachines model 780 monitor comes on for one second then goes blank

CANNOT COMPUTE!!!! NEED MORE DATA! Is your monitor the problem or the computer? Try connecting the monitor to another computer. You can also try connecting a laptop with an external video adaptor to the monitor to test it.

Window resume loader

Windows Vista doesn't shut down the machine by default when you press the power button. Additionally, if you look at the bottom of the start menu you'll see this:

The button on the left, highlighted here in bronze, does NOT turn the machine off in Windows - it suspends it, which requires power. When the battery runs down, the power goes out and you get this message the next time you start up.

Some laptops also indicate suspend mode by flashing the power light.

Happily, if you click on the little right facing arrow a menu pops up, one of the options of which is "Shut down" and this will bring Windows down properly and fully.

You can also change the function of the power switch (which defaults to suspend, NOT shut down) by going into the power options from Control Panel:

Selecting one of the above options will allow you to set the power button and closing the lid to turn the machine off fully, not suspend it.

Sometimes when I turn my laptop on, I hear the computer winding up then it stops. The screen remains blank. Sometimes I have to restart the computer 4 or 5 times before it comes on. And sometimes when it...

Yes, WinXP's relationship with your laptop's drivers has gone sour, like Pet Sematary. Bury your laptop...no wait, just reload the laptop's drivers (Dell or Toshiba or whatever) so hibernate works correctly...or un-fiddle with any hibernate/sleep/low-power utilities you use. Alternately consider that your laptop's reading signals from the battery or a cooling fan; telling XP or the BIOS that component is not in tolerable condition, and thus shutting down.

Have your feet rolfed while you fix that situation up.
