Dvd drive problem

I am using HP pavillion DV6516TX for the past one and half years, window vista, recently my dvd drive is giving me a lot of problem. sometimes the dvd drive could not be seen on the window explorer, it plays a dvd/cd for 15-20 mins and then the drive to stop responding until and unless i manually take out the disc by inserting a pin in the hole in front of the dvd drive. these days while starting up my laptop, it just dont start, black screen with a white cursor blinking, once i open the drive with the same method, the pc starts up, everything is normal except the dvd drive. After starting the laptop, if i close the drive, everything goes slow down. Please suggest something, is the problem is in the drive or in the laptop

    dear

thanks for the soluton, i think there might be a better solution than replacing the DVD drive coz sometime it do work with no problem at all, but the last few days it just got worse. someone suggested me that the PC ight be reading the drive at the start up for booting CD, some to reinstalled the drive driver, someone to take out the drive and check the connection, etc. i better do all these things first. if u have any new suggestion, please let me know, actually replacing with a new one will take a big buck out of my pocket which i dont have now. i just think if it just get OK tommorrow morning

It is your DVD drive. Hopefully you have an extended warranty. It needs to be replaced.

If you don't have a warranty, then it is not that difficult to replace.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.

    Thanks, Joe

Hi,
If you want to make sure whether the issue is with the Drive or not, I recommend you to try removing and booting the Notebook without the Drive.
The warranty of the Notebook should not be effected with this and however, your Notebook should be out of base factory warranty.
You can find the required instructions to remove the DVD Drive of your Notebook from the Manual of the Notebook which can be accessed from the link below :
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01295877.pdf

Look for the instructions starting from page number  59  (67 of 160) in the Manual for the required instructions.
Here is the procedure you need to follow :
Remove the DVD Drive when the Notebook is turned off and power adapter and battery disconnected.
Start the Notebook.
Check whether you have the same performance issues even if the Drive is not connected to the Notebook.
If the Notebook is working fine, just turn it off and reinsert the Drive and fix the screw.
However, if the performance issue exists even if the DVD Drive is not connected to the Notebook, the issue should be something else.
This should also resolve if the issue is related to the connectivity of the Drive as removing and reseating the DVD Drive should solve this.
Hope this helps...

I still believe it is the drive. Several months ago, I sent my wife's DV9000 back to HP for repair because of the same problem.
Another thing you can do is to clean the lens. open the drive, then you will see a lens on the tray.
take a cotton swab and dab some alcohol on it and clean the lens. This may help .

No audio device installed.

It's unlikly that HP will relesae he needed Vista drivers for your sound device.
That has been a problem with Vista since day 1.
If you want your sound back, you should go back to XP.
Windows Vista use a new software architecture, and hardware devices must comply with it, in order to be used by the new OS.
Sorry

I found this problem to more users of this model ..the only thing I can advice you is to try to change with another comp model ....some have a lot of theories ..about it ...and long fixes..but It seems that the problems came with some vista updates ...so ..either get on xp sp3...cause its reliable ..or change it ..cause it will never work proper..

I beleive that the DVD Drive icon had dissappeared from My Computer.
However, I recommend you to check in the Device Manager by clicking the + mark next to DVD/CD-Rom Drives.
If you find any entry under the DVD/CD-Rom Drives, right click on the entry and select Properties.
In the Properties window that opens, check the status of the drive listed under Device Status.
If you find any error message with Drivers, we need to make some registry changes to reinstall the Drivers for the DVD Drive which should solve the issue.
Since you had not mentioned the Operating System installed in the Notebook depending on which the steps to edit the Registry depends, I am providing the steps for both XP and Vista :
Uninstalling DVD Drive Drivers from Registry in XP :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Follow the instructions listed under Advanced Troubleshooting to edit the Registry in XP
Better way is to copy the entire link and paste it in the address bar of a new Interner Explorer window and press enter key.
Uninstalling DVD Drive Drivers from Registry in Vista :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us
Better way is to copy the entire link and paste it in the address bar of a new Interner Explorer window and press enter key.

You may either find the Upper or Lower Filters or Both as per the instructions provided in the links above. Delete the Upper and Lower Filters which ever you find from the Registry and restart the computer which should solve the issue.
However, if there is no entry of the DVD Drive even in the Device Manager, you may have to remove and reinsert the Drive manually as it can be an issue with the connectivity of the Drive with the Notebook.
You can find the instructions to remove and reinsert the DVD Drive from the manual of the Notebook which can be found from the link provided below :
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00737799.pdf

You can find the required instructiosn to remove and reinsert the DVD Drive in the Notebook starting from page number 110 of 233 in the Manual.
However, if there are no error messages in the DVD Drive properties window in the Device Manager and if the DVD Drive icon is missing from My Computer window, all you need to do is to try changing the Drive Letter of the DVD Drive from the Disk Management window.
Find the instructions to change or assign a Drive Letter to the DVD Drive in XP from the links below :
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/fastFaqLiteDocument?lc=no&dlc=no&cc=no&docname=lpg40244#N545

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/ht/changedriveltr.htm

Better way is to copy the entire link and paste it in the address bar of a new Interner Explorer window and press enter key.

Find the instructions to change or assign Drive Letter for the DVD Drive in Vista from the link below :
http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/506/vista_xp_reassign_change_drive_letters/

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windowsvista/ht/chdrlettervista.htm

Better way is to copy the entire link and paste it in the address bar of a new Interner Explorer window and press enter key.

I am sure that any of the instructions provided should solve the issue with the DVD Drive in your Notebook.

HP Pavillion not reading audio CD

It is possible that this is a drive issue, I've seen drives that one of the optical reader device has gone out, but generally it'e the DVD reader and will only read CD's. It's very rare that the CD reader goes and the DVD reader works. Before you replace drive, if it's only music CD's (you didn't mention program CD's), then update your media player. If it still won't play, then unistall the media player and completely reload it. At this point you can replacse the drive.
