Question about HP Compaq Presario V2000 Notebook
I am using HP pavillion DV6516TX for the past one and half years, window vista, recently my dvd drive is giving me a lot of problem. sometimes the dvd drive could not be seen on the window explorer, it plays a dvd/cd for 15-20 mins and then the drive to stop responding until and unless i manually take out the disc by inserting a pin in the hole in front of the dvd drive. these days while starting up my laptop, it just dont start, black screen with a white cursor blinking, once i open the drive with the same method, the pc starts up, everything is normal except the dvd drive. After starting the laptop, if i close the drive, everything goes slow down. Please suggest something, is the problem is in the drive or in the laptop
If you want to make sure whether the issue is with the Drive or not, I recommend you to try removing and booting the Notebook without the Drive.
The warranty of the Notebook should not be effected with this and however, your Notebook should be out of base factory warranty.
You can find the required instructions to remove the DVD Drive of your Notebook from the Manual of the Notebook which can be accessed from the link below :
Look for the instructions starting from page number 59 (67 of 160) in the Manual for the required instructions.
Here is the procedure you need to follow :
Remove the DVD Drive when the Notebook is turned off and power adapter and battery disconnected.
Start the Notebook.
Check whether you have the same performance issues even if the Drive is not connected to the Notebook.
If the Notebook is working fine, just turn it off and reinsert the Drive and fix the screw.
However, if the performance issue exists even if the DVD Drive is not connected to the Notebook, the issue should be something else.
This should also resolve if the issue is related to the connectivity of the Drive as removing and reseating the DVD Drive should solve this.
Hope this helps...

I still believe it is the drive. Several months ago, I sent my wife's DV9000 back to HP for repair because of the same problem.
Another thing you can do is to clean the lens. open the drive, then you will see a lens on the tray.
take a cotton swab and dab some alcohol on it and clean the lens. This may help .
