Sony LIP-4WM for MZ-NH1 Personal MiniDisc Player

MZ-NH1

By Rachel007 - usenet poster

I received my MZ-NH1 today (from Crutchfield), and I suspect the battery is
fried. I thought I'd check here first to see if I might be doing something
wrong.

After inserting the battery (LIP-4WM) in the unit, I put the NH1 in the
cradle and hit the "charge" button. The charge light comes on, the counter
displays: CHG:--min briefly, and then it displays CHG:00 min. After about
thirty seconds or so, the charge light goes off and display goes blank, as
if to indicate no more charging is necessary. When I remove the NH1 from the
cradle and try to operate it, nothing happens. No readout in the window, no
disc operation, no nothing.

Just to say thanks to the two (Slartibartfast and Timothy Davis) who
answered my question concerning variable speed and variable pitch. I
been working to much to deal with this till now. I should have my
MZ-NH1 here within two days or so they say. Be glad to give any help
I can on this unit. Not real happy concerning the hi md blanks they
say it will be about 12 days before I seen them. I have got to look
and find the best price/performance/seller for these. Maybe I better
stock up on meds to deal with the software, from listening to some of
you guys it seems to be a pita. Again, Thanks a lot.

I have seen a few of those Gum stick batteries (I think I have one,,,
check that I know I have one) and you are quite right, it's not easy to
be certain you are inserting them right less you have an advanced degree
or two in the proper field (Mine is a very basic degree, however it is
in the proper field, electronics and engineering (actually a degree in
one and certificate in the other, not in that order)

Some companies have spent the additional $0.01 it takes to make is so
you can't put the battery in wrong,,, Seems Sony is not one of those
companies. And I'm not kidding about that one cent

Oh.. And I would NEVER call you a moron.. A moron would never have asked
for help but blundered ahead blindly till they broke it beyond all hope
of recovery

Perhaps #3 should have been: "You are a moron." I *did* have the battery in
wrong, although in my own defense it was not easy to determine its correct
insertion from the diagram in the book. <embarrassed>

Well... That is why I listed #1 first, it is the most likely (rest are
all about equal)

There is a possibility that the battery charge circuit, and only that
circuit, is fried in the recorder... Very slight but possible

I do strongly favor bad battery

Everything seems OK there. Otherwise I suspect I would have gotten no
readings at all.

I checked that out as well.

The recorder works just fine. I've tried it both with USB from my laptop and
from a.c.

I suspect it's #1--fried battery.

Thanks

There are 4 possibilities.

1: you are right, battery fried, Contact Crutchfield and Sony, Do this
2nd however.

2: you forgot to fully unwrap the battery and there is still some
plastic over the contacts (I am assuming you checked this already but
just for fun, since it costs nothing and takes but seconds check again)

3: You put the battery in backwards, or upside down, or some such (is
this even possible? I don't know) so the contacts are not contacting

4: There is something wrong with the recorder (See 1)

I hit "send" by accident. Anyway, continuing, I can operate the unit in the
cradle with the AC, which is clumsy as hell, and the unit will also operate
from the power fed to it by USB from my laptop.

Has anyone experienced a similar battery problem and solved it. (Also, try
finding an LIP-4WM anywhere.)

Any help will be appreciated.
